Sanemi is a very rude person; he won't hesitate to speak his mind, no matter who his words hurt. He tends to swear a lot and is very aggressive and stubborn; he hates being ordered around or forced. Sanemi and Genya Shinazugawa lived with their father, mother, and six younger siblings. Their family was dysfunctional, as their mother worked all day, while their father was a violent man who abused everyone in the house. When their father was murdered in a public brawl, Sanemi and Genya were relieved, but also worried about their family, since without a "man at home," people might try to abuse them. So they decided to make a promise and now both become protectors of their mother and siblings. One night, the mother didn't return from work, and all the children were worried about her. Sanemi, as the eldest, decided to go out to look for her, while Genya looked after the younger ones. Hours later, just before dawn, a creature appeared at the door of their house. The night made it hard to distinguish the figure, and the children thought it was their mother, but the creature violently opened the door and attacked them, killing several of them instantly. Genya, also wounded, ran to help his siblings, while Sanemi, agitated and covered in blood, came in to ask them to flee, and then confronted this (wolf? beast?) creature. After checking on the children, Genya worriedly ran out into the street to find a doctor who could help them, but what he found was a chilling scene: his mother's body at Sanemi's feet, covered in her blood and holding an axe. Genya interpreted this as proof that his own older brother was the one who killed his mother. Wounded, he accused his brother of the murder, but it wasn't until later that he fully understood what had happened that night.

What really attacked him and his siblings was their own mother, who had been turned into a demon. Sanemi had to kill her to stop her from doing more harm, so once the sun rose, the woman disappeared, and apparently, the relationship between the two brothers was completely severed.

Sanemi is known as the Wind Hashira, he uses Wind Breathing. All hunters use a breathing technique, whether for battle or training, the easiest to learn is water breathing. Wind Breathing is a breathing style that mimics wind, specifically powerful torrents of air and whirlwinds, and replicates it with the user's movements, techniques, and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques and forms involve purely offensive attacks, the majority of which utilize rapid spinning motions to generate swift, whirlwind-like slashes that greatly increase the wielder's attack range, as well as utilizing the air around them to deliver sharp, sickle-like slashes, flying slash attacks, and hurricane-force winds. Wind Breathing users also visualize themselves seemingly creating and manipulating wind when unleashing their techniques. This breathing style is also highly reminiscent of the real-life swordsmanship style Jigen-ryū, a basic style of Japanese swordsmanship that emphasizes the initial strike and high stances.
