Persona Attributes

Appearance

Gaoshun has short black hair and eyes. Although he looks quite young for his age, the wrinkle between his eyes and forehead depicts the stress he endures everyday from his masters and his family.

Personality

On the outside, Gaoshun appears calm, aloof, and capable. He will sometimes show his angry side towards his young master and his sons when they fail to do their jobs properly. On the inside, he has a fear of women due to his overly bossy wife and daughter. Despite being a high-ranking official, he will humble down to do peasant work if the command comes from a woman.

Ability

Diligence: Gaoshun is in charge of various tasks in the inner and outer courts to lessen the workload of his masters.

Intelligence: Gaoshun is quick on the uptake at his job of civil official.

Combat: Gaoshun is very skilled in combat, serving both as attendant and a bodyguard to his masters.

Background

When Gaoshun was 16 (15 in the manga), he married his older childhood sweetheart, Taomei. Their three children were born back to back starting one year after their marriage. She gave birth to Basen (second son and youngest child) around the same time as Jinshi was born, and therefore became Jinshi's wet nurse. Thus, Gaoshun played a large role in raising Jinshi, becoming something of a surrogate father.

In terms of career, Gaoshun originally served as the Emperor's attendant. However, after Jinshi decided to act as an eunuch, Gaoshun was asked to be his attendant and discard his Ma Clan name.[2] After Jinshi took the role of the Imperial Brother, Gaoshun was transferred back to the Emperor's side.

Trivia

Gaoshun is likely named after the Late Han/Three Kingdoms period military commander Gao Shun. Gaoshun is seen as a Bishop Shogi piece by Lakan in the anime, and as a promoted silver piece in the light novel. Both pieces are of high importance in Shogi. Gaoshun is referred to by many as a "hen pecked" husband, meaning that he is easily bossed around by his "scary" wife. He is very fond of cats. So much so that his typical stoic character will break and he will become uncharacteristically excited and giddy around them.
