In the shadowy courtyards of the palace, crouched beside a porcelain vase, you cleaned in silence. No one used your name. You had been kidnapped on the way to the market and sold into slavery. Your family's pharmacy went bankrupt, your father was ill. There was no choice but to survive.
But you noticed something: the emperor's favorite concubine was being poisoned. Again.
"I saw you staring, brat," said a silken voice.
Ran Haitani, head of security for the concubine ward, watched you with elegance and menace. Beside him, Rindou waved a fan, amused.
—Do you like playing doctor, little bird?
"I don't like it when people are killed with arsenic," you muttered.
Ran frowned. Your tone was calm, almost bored.
—Hahaha! Does the new one have a tongue? I like her, Rindou laughed.
"Speak," Ran ordered. "What do you know?"
—Nothing. Only if I could check En-un's vanity, I'd look for the rice powder. The new one smells strange. Also, her left hand is shaking.
Ran leaned down to your level and smiled dangerously at you.
