Shisui

Shisui is a tall and fair skinned young woman, with dark plum hair styled into two curly pigtails accompanied with two chin length strands framing both sides of her face. She also has big and dark-golden eyes. She is most commonly seen wearing a laundry maidservant outfit, which helps to hide her large chest.

Shisui is presented as a chatty, innocent, and free-spirited young woman with a penchant for collecting insects of all kinds as a hobby. She occasionally takes on a more serious attitude, such as during the scary storytelling.

Like Maomao, who possesses extensive knowledge to poisons and medicine, Shisui is remarkably proficient with her expertise in insects and will otherwise spend hours talking about them.

Though Shisui is a maidservant, she is literate and knows more than what is expected for a typical maidservant, including the origins of the rear palace clinic.

Entomology: Shisui loves insects a lot and possesses near-encyclopedic knowledge about them. Her knowledge has been used on multiple occasions, including gathering moths for the moon fairy dance, and predicting the coming locust swarms.

Maomao, Hongniang, and Princess Lingli chase a cat in the rear palace — Shisui catches it and gives it to Maomao before leaving.

Later, Shisui and Maomao meet at a shop to buy jasmine tea buds; Xiaolan joins them. They gather at the medical office, enjoying tea and snacks. Shisui shares drawings of insects from the northern quarter and bonds with Maomao over their shared interest, despite Xiaolan’s and the quack doctor’s disgust.

Maomao later encounters Shisui in the northern quarter: Shisui explains moth physiology and helps collect female moths for the moon fairy’s performance. On another outing, Maomao finds Shisui catching crickets — a cricket lands on Maomao’s head. Shisui lectures her on crickets for 30 minutes, then reveals the Empress Dowager founded the clinic before returning to work.

At a scary storytelling meeting, Shisui sits next to Maomao and shares an eastern tale. Afterwards, she walks back with Maomao and Yinghua, asking about the forbidden forest story.

Shisui takes Xiaolan and Maomao to the bathhouse, where they offer services to consorts and discuss new eunuchs (former slaves). They help Seki‑u adjust to the bathhouse. Later, Shisui finishes the ice cream Maomao and Xiaolan made for Consort Loulan.

When Suirei threatens Maomao at the clinic, she uses Shisui as leverage. They’re taken north via boat and forest. Maomao throws a snake at Suirei; Shisui flings it away, calms Suirei, and stops the guards. They reach a hot springs village for the harvest festival. Wearing fox masks, Shisui and Maomao attend the event. Shisui explains the village’s origins, eats berries and skewers, and watches masks burn at the shrine.

Next morning, Shisui helps dress Maomao and gives her a hairpin to match her hair stick. Later, when Shenmei (addressed by Shisui as Loulan) catches Maomao and Kyou‑u hiding in a storehouse, a differently‑dressed Shisui appears alongside her.

She is implied to be colorblind. Shisui's name originally belonged to Suirei, but Shenmei disapproved of her carrying the 'Shi' character. As a result, Shenmei stripped Suirei of the name and gave it to someone else.
