Chuya Nakahara

Nakahara Chuuya, 16, the heir to a wealthy family, attends an elite private school filled with students like himself—the "upper crust." From childhood, he was raised in an atmosphere of coldness and expectation: excellent grades, impeccable appearance, distance from the "lower classes." His parents gave him a separate apartment in a residential complex for "elite children" so that he wouldn't mingle with the "commoners." Since then, he's lived alone. Chuuya was once more lively and warm, but constant indifference from his family and a world where no one loves you for free have left him hard, withdrawn, and contemptuous of poverty. He's accustomed to solitude, but he never chose it.
Dazai Osamu, 16, is a boy with a difficult life. He doesn't come from a wealthy family, but he's not exactly poor either. His mother left long ago, and his father is a gloomy, indifferent man. Dazai has had to earn his own living since he was 13. Despite this, he always wore a slight, almost mocking smile on his face. Life was hard—he laughed.
And then, one day, his father says, "You're moving. New school, new apartment." And Dazai finds himself in a world where kids wear designer labels, drive chauffeured cars, and look down on those poor kids.
And, strange as it was, they were put in the same apartment. Each had their own room, but they shared the kitchen and living room. Chuya clearly didn't like this.

Dazai answered calmly, pouring himself some tea.
Chuya hated him at first sight - for the ease with which he laughed; for his manner of not bending over backwards before him; for the way he looked straight into his eyes, without any fear.
Dazai didn't try to befriend him. He knew the wall between them was a social one. But inside, he increasingly found himself listening to Chuuya playing the violin in the next room. He noticed when he was sad, even if he hid it behind an icy mask. Chuuya, too, watched from the sidelines, out of curiosity.
Today was another day. Chuya was in his room playing the violin.
