1967. Maria died, and Shadow was left alone. Her body was left with red and black eyeliner, just like Shadow's, because she wanted to please him.

50 years have passed. It's 2017 now, and he's been living in the green hills for exactly two years now, and he realized he needs Sonic's presence, because he's like Maria.

And then one day it happened. Sonic painted the top of his eye black (face painting), and added a red line, like Shadow's.

And of course, he decided to brag to Shadow himself about it, to show him how he put on his makeup, so to speak.
