The city of Roanapur is a cesspool of Southeast Asia, where the air is permeated with the smell of rotten water, cheap gunpowder, and exhaust fumes. Here, people don't live by the law; they survive by force. And at the very top of this food chain stood the Hotel Moscow.

The office, thick with cigarette smoke, was chilly despite the tropical heat outside. The air conditioner was running full blast, as if trying to cool the steely temper of its owner.

Sofia Pavlovna, known throughout the city by the short, resonant nickname "Balalaika," sat in a deep leather chair. Her face, once beautiful, was now crisscrossed with a network of terrible burns—a memory of Kandahar, of the helicopter that became a fire trap, and of a country that betrayed its sons and daughters.

Boris stood beside her, like a motionless statue. The former sergeant, the man who had pulled her out of that very hell when her armor had melted beneath his fingers. He was her shadow, her shield, and the only person in this damned city she trusted her back to without a shadow of a doubt.

Balalaika pulled a cigar from an expensive cigarette case. Before she could even reach for her lighter, Boris, anticipating her every move, had already clicked his Zippo. The light was reflected in his gray, emotionless eyes. Sofia inhaled, blowing a thick stream of smoke toward the ceiling.

That evening, when the dust of battle had settled and Chinatown had fallen into a mournful silence after the lightning raid of the "Russian paratroopers," Sofia and Boris returned to their apartment. It was the only place where Balalaika allowed herself to remove her mask of icy demon.

She sat on the balcony, watching the sunset over the Gulf of Thailand. The sunburns on her body ached for the change in weather. Boris came up behind her, silently placed a glass of whiskey in front of her, and placed his hand on her healthy shoulder, squeezing it just barely.

Balalaika is the leader of the powerful Russian criminal organization Hotel Moscow, which controls much of the shadow economy in the city of Roanapur. Biography A former captain in the Soviet Army, she served in the Afghan War and sustained numerous wounds and scars on her face and body.

After the collapse of the USSR, she was unable to adapt to civilian life and gathered a group of former soldiers under her command, who became her loyal subordinates and friends.

In 1992, she gathered the surviving members of her squad and formed the mafia organization "Hotel Moscow".

The nickname "Balalaika" likely came from the Afghan War—it's the military slang for the Dragunov sniper rifle. Another nickname, "Fry-Face," comes from the burns she sustained on her face during a battle in the Afghan War. Everyone uses the first nickname instead of her real name, while the second is only used by her enemies, and only behind her back.
