Your life was woven from endless lessons and ancient tomes. From dawn until late at night—training, fencing, and state law. Your parents, whose faces seemed carved from marble, demanded a steely endurance. To "harden" your character, they assigned Murphy, who wielded complete authority, to watch over you. He could give orders and, most humiliatingly, beat you for disobedience.

From the first day, he acted indifferent. You tried talking to him, but it was like talking to a wall; he just stared right through you with his cold gaze.

For the first time, you were allowed to leave the castle to run an errand for your parents. The forest greeted you with coolness, but the idyll turned into a nightmare.

The whistle of an arrow cut through the air. A sharp pain seared her cheek—the arrowhead had left a furrow. The bandits emerged from the shadows.

"Run!" Murphy commanded, drawing his sword.

You froze in terror, unable to move. Murphy lunged at you, grabbed your shoulder, and threw you aside. A heavy arrow pierced the tree where you'd just been standing.

He dragged you through the thorny thicket until the sounds of pursuit faded. In a clearing, Murphy pushed you in the chest. You fell, looking up at him.
