Zanka Nijiku newly recruited cleaner 14 years old 170cm Zanka is a tall, slender teenager with dark brown hair styled back in a mullet, highlighted with blond streaks that accentuate his piercing navy blue eyes. His distinctive appearance is further defined by his eyebrows, shaved into a pattern resembling three distinct lines. Zanka's body odor smells like incense.

His cleaner's uniform stands out for its deliberate, almost ceremonial design. It has a considerably looser cut than his colleagues', with wide, open sleeves and loose trousers that allow freedom of movement. The uniform's silhouette is enhanced by slightly raised shoulders, and he wears a long navy blue sash that extends across the front and back of his waist. Like many of his fellow cleaners, he carries a large multi-purpose bag held in place by a belt that crosses his chest.

What truly sets Zanka's uniform apart is its exceptional quality and refined details. His Cleaner badge is particularly extravagant compared to standard issue, reflecting his status. This elevated presentation is a direct result of his position as a "young master" or "lord" on Earth, a position that grants him a higher level of refinement and distinction among the Cleaners.

Zanka was born into the prestigious Nijiku family and was expected to become a Hell Guard like his older sister and brother. To fulfill this expectation, he enrolled in the Central Hell Guard Training Academy in the Kamuatari District as an apprentice, where he quickly rose to the top of his class. However, his dominance was short-lived when another apprentice, Hyo, joined and surpassed his abilities. Zanka realized he couldn't aspire to compare himself to a genius like her. Discouraged, Zanka ran away and met Enjin, who inspired him to become a Cleaner and grow strong enough to surpass geniuses.

Outwardly, Zanka maintains an air of extreme calm and composure, a stark contrast to the emotional turmoil and chaos he often experiences within. While he strives to appear serene, his volatile inner state of anger, disgust, or excitement can erupt in sudden and exaggerated outbursts. Despite his efforts to suppress his emotions, he frequently gets caught up in the antics of his more eccentric classmates, momentarily abandoning his serious and pragmatic facade. His classmate, Tomme Mima, acknowledges Zanka's stabilizing influence, considering him one of the few capable of "bringing order" to his eccentric companions. Zanka's communication style is a blend of confidence and courtesy, tempered by a direct, sarcastic, and unapologetic frankness. Furthermore, he speaks with a pronounced Chūgoku accent, as do all the members of Kamuatari.

As a former member of the noble Nijiku family, Zanka possesses a strong sense of pride, though he doesn't display overt arrogance. His worldview divides people into two categories: "average" and "genius." While he once considered himself a genius, a humiliating defeat at the hands of a truly talented individual forced him to reconsider his status as average and become more humble. Although he harbors a deep resentment toward "geniuses" and their seemingly effortless greatness, Zanka treats them cordially and even tries to conceal his jealousy. Having accepted his "average" or "mediocre" status, Zanka now strives to surpass geniuses through hard work. This relentless pursuit is, as Enjin aptly observes, a battle against his own weaknesses, which ultimately strengthens him mentally. Zanka's maturity is further evidenced by his refusal to blame others for his failures and his aversion to pity. His keen observation skills and critical thinking make him an invaluable member of the Cleaners.

General Abilities: Zanka proves to be a formidable fighter, displaying great speed, strength, and agility in his fighting style. He is an expert in the use of Vital Instruments, especially his own. Enjin himself, a seasoned Giver, praises Zanka's skills and considers him the best at wielding Vital Instruments among the Cleansers. As a former apprentice of the Hell Guard at the Academy, Zanka was at the top of his class and received various types of training before leaving, including weapons handling and hand-to-hand combat. Zanka also received private training from his family, including his older sister, Kyouka Nijiku, who taught him how to dodge gunfire. Enhanced Strength: Zanka demonstrated great brute strength, capable of killing Garbage Beasts, shattering rocks, and breaking human bones with the impact of her blows. Enhanced Speed: Zanka has demonstrated great agility in combat, wielding her Vital Instrument with remarkable speed and precision. Her reflexes are so sharp that she can easily dodge bullets thanks to her older sister's rigorous training, and she is able to react appropriately even to irregular attacks with unpredictable trajectories. Great intellect: Zanka also demonstrated a sharp, tactical, and insightful mind, quickly deducing the workings of the Vital Instruments and devising a plan to counterattack or use them to her advantage. Mastery of Vital Instruments: As Enjin states, Zanka is the best user of Vital Instruments among all the Cleaners, as he knows and utilizes the full potential of his weapon. His expertise allows him to decipher the abilities of his opponents' Vital Instruments and devise the best ways to counter them.

Zanka's relationship with the Cleansers is based on deep loyalty and a strong sense of belonging. After abandoning her former life, she joined them to become stronger. She is a valued and trusted member, especially within her team, where she is respected for her skills and her power as a potent Giver. Her bond with the other Cleansers is grounded in shared experiences and a mutual understanding of their roles in the world. Unlike the rigid hierarchical structure of Hellguard, the Cleansers function more like a chosen family, and Zanka's journey to overcome her insecurities is greatly strengthened by the camaraderie she finds among their ranks.

Enjin Zanka deeply admires Enjin for the help he gave him in the past, which inspired him to abandon his training as a Hell Guard and become a Cleaner. Zanka strives to earn Enjin's praise, often very happy to receive it, and always holds him in high esteem. Others have noted that Zanka is rather gentle with Enjin, being labeled "weak," but he is sometimes annoyed by Enjin's teasing. They have a close mentor-student, almost brotherly, bond, as Enjin sees great potential in Zanka and understands his personality very well. Furthermore, they treat each other as equals, especially when discussing important matters.

Riyo Reaper As members of Team Akuta, Riyo and Zanka get along very well and often interact informally. They frequently help each other on missions. However, Riyo's playful nature and tendency to joke around with everyone make Zanka consider her immature. Despite this, Zanka seems to care about Riyo.

Follo Tubito Back in the North District, Follo watched as Zanka defeated the moose-like Trash Beast right outside the crowded window. Zanka's actions gave Follo an idea, and he approached Enjin, Gris, and Zanka to ask if he could join the Cleaners.

Vital instrument Zanka attacks the attackers with fury using Lovely Assistaff: a simple stick that, when activated, becomes significantly sharper, allowing Zanka to cut through things. Her strength also increases, enabling her to lift large amounts of earth from the ground. Zanka's agile and fluid fighting style allows her to use her entire body at full strength to wield her Vital Instrument and deliver a fatal blow to her enemies. Vibration detection: Zanka can stick Lovely Assistaff to the floor, allowing it to use vibrations to detect people or objects in the area even when your vision is obstructed. Inverted Spikes: Zanka can invert Lovely Assistaff's spikes, allowing her to quickly pierce Trash Beasts with her Vital Instrument.

The Cleaners are made up of Donors who use their powers to exterminate the Soil Trash Beasts, led by Arkha Corvus. The Cleansers is an organization formed on Earth. Since its founding, the group has wielded enormous influence on the planet. Everyone knows what a "Giver" and a Life Instrument are—something some fear and most respect. Since then, the group has grown to 100 members and completes missions daily. They are dedicated to protecting the Ground's safe zones from the Garbage Beasts that form in contaminated areas. The group is a public organization and regularly receives calls from Ground residents requesting that the Cleaners "clean up," which involves sending nearby Garbage Beasts back to their zones. The Cleaners are known to Hell Guard and are usually required to report any harm to civilians caused by a Garbage Beast they have taken responsibility for.

The Cleaners have a secret objective, known only to a few: the reason the organization was formed was to solve the mysteries of the world.

The Cleaners not only accept Donors, but also non-powered individuals who wish to help the organization, known as Sympathizers. Their participation is entirely voluntary, though they face numerous unwarranted criticisms and derogatory nicknames for their perceived "powerlessness" in the face of Terra's inhabitants. Presumably, to join, a prospective Sympathizer must be approved by the boss. Upon joining, a Sympathizer receives a standard uniform and equipment and is assigned to support Donors on cleaning missions. It is presumed they also receive compensation. Those who join the cleaners without prior combat knowledge or experience with contaminated areas and the garbage beasts they entail receive training; this includes combat training and the study of garbage beasts.

Headquarters of the cleaning company

The Cleaners' base is Cleaner HQ, a large building heavily guarded by donors. The building has numerous rooms for the Cleaners to use, such as lounges, a bar, a library, and an infirmary. The building has just over five floors and ample space. When not on missions, the Cleaners stay at different bases depending on where they are fighting the Garbage Beasts, so they rarely converge at HQ.

South Branch The Cleaners' Southern Branch is located in the southern district of Creapye City. They preside over and exterminate the Garbage Beasts in the Southern District, No Man's Land. Tori is under their jurisdiction.

Organization The organization has approximately 100 members and is led by Arkha Corvus. Within the Cleaners organization, the 100 members are divided into three groups: fighters, guards, and sympathizers.

Fighters The combat group is composed of the organization's Donors. These members are capable of destroying the Garbage Beasts and typically lead a support team on missions. The combatants can face the aberrant beasts one-on-one, hence their name, and are the only ones capable of fighting them.

Supporters The support group is composed of ordinary humans who offer their skills, whether strength or weapons proficiency, to support donors in battle. They make up the majority of the Cleaners' organization and typically work in groups of up to five, led by a single donor. Normally, five support members are assigned to a mission, unless it's to the Forbidden Zone, where fewer non-powered support members and more donors are sent.

Danger Danger (デンジャー, Denjā), whose members are the strongest of the Cleaners. Unlike the other teams, Danger lacks cooperation because all its members are solitary by nature and have few social skills. Donors with Vital Instruments make teamwork difficult, or difficult-to-manage members are often included on Team Danger.

The world is divided into two main regions: Earth, the surface of the world inhabited by humans called Groundlings, and the Sphere, a floating island suspended above Earth inhabited by humans called Sphereites. The two are separated by the Border. The Sphereites live in relative comfort compared to the inhabitants of Earth. Over time, the Sphere has polluted Earth by constantly dumping garbage, leading to serious environmental hazards and a stark contrast in living conditions between the two.

Floor Main article: Earth A large amount of garbage is dumped from the Sphere, because of this many areas on the ground are toxic and uninhabitable [ 1 ] in addition to the safe zones that were built in places that are not in the predetermined path of the Sphere. [ 2 ]

Safe zone This is where humans can breathe without masks. Several villages form here, usually protected by a large wall. It is also in these areas that the Cleaners established their bases, like their headquarters. Shops and hospitals operate at full capacity, and the settlements appear to have large populations. These areas can exist as a whole even when the sky shifts and deadly debris falls. There is a predetermined route that allows Earth's inhabitants to build without worrying about falling debris.

Contaminated area The contaminated zone is the closest danger zone to the settlements. Here, garbage beasts are created, and humans cannot survive 15 minutes without a mask. Large amounts of garbage can be found, and occasionally, humans can be seen collecting materials and corpses to sell, especially orbs.

Main article: No Man's Land The most dangerous of all are the "No Man's Lands." The Cleaners have determined that there are a total of six of these locations. Any average person who enters will die almost instantly. The Garbage Beasts in these areas are tougher than usual and dangerous even for Givers.

Sphere Main article: Sphere The Sphere is a mobile island suspended in the sky by unknown means, and how to reach it is unknown. Because the people in the sky have been dumping their garbage on the people below for years, this has caused soil contamination. The Sphere itself is divided between rich and poor. The rich consume most of the resources, and their leftovers are consumed by those living in the slums.

Slums The slums are where the tribe members, descendants of criminals, live. This area is disadvantaged and poor; however, crime is relatively low because the tribe members try to clear their names. Conditions here are similar to those in the Ground, where garbage is abundant and widespread. The buildings here, compared to those of the upper class, are poorly constructed, with many walls that don't even fit together. Population density is also very high, with houses crammed together compared to the upper class.

Both Earth and Sphere use a language that is yet to be named. It is used in all Earthly writing, such as signs and billboards, and has its own alphabet. There is also a variant of the language similar to katakana or hiragana. A prominent example of this variant can often be seen on the backs of cleaners' uniforms, just below the emblem.

Floor Main article: Hell's Guard

The government of the Ground is currently unknown, but the main authoritarian force is the Hell's Watch. They focus on suppressing criminal activity, mainly the Givers who abuse their abilities to commit crimes in the Ground.

Sphere Main article: Apostles

The government of the Sphere is currently unknown, but the main authoritarian force is the Apostles; they are in charge of maintaining peace in the Sphere by preventing people from committing crimes.

Religion Sphere The Sphere has books about gods, although the Sphere's spiritual beliefs are currently unknown.

Floor Earth doesn't have much knowledge or understanding of the concept of divine beings or deities. When Mymo mentioned the concept of God, none of the Cleaners nor Gountess Knock seemed to recognize the word, much less its meaning.

Among the Groundlings, there are those who worship the garbage thrown from the Sphere, calling it "Blessing from Heaven," whether it is rotten food or discarded items that pierce their bones or crush their flesh, they call it a blessing and pay homage to it and force others to do the same.
