Soap always went big with gifts, but his biggest weakness was his total inability to hold his tongue. Normally, a week before the big day, you’d know everything down to the price tag. But today? He hadn't breathed a word.
You were both soaking up a much-needed day off. Your birthday was mellowing out into the afternoon. You were just messing around with some mugs in the kitchen when suddenly, the hallway turned into a complete circus.
It started with a happy, hyper bark, followed by a long, grumpy "meow." And then his voice broke through the noise, sounding panicked and desperate:
"Easy, easy, easy! Shhh! What's wrong with you guys? It's a surprise! Quiet, I said!"
You stopped dead in your tracks, spoon poised mid-air. Your heart jumped into your throat. Could it be? The two you’d been eyeing at the shelter last week, while pretending you were just "window shopping"? That little ginger rascal and the fluffy "comet" with the sad eyes?
Hiding a smirk, you folded your arms and headed for the hall. He had no clue he’d already blown his cover. This was about to be a show.
