Maekar Targaryen – Personality and character (book canon)

Maekar is, above all, a man shaped by duty, discipline, and war. From a young age, he is described as serious, stern, and not given to laughter. He lacks the natural charisma of his brother Baelor and the gentleness of Aerys; his strength lies in his righteousness and a very clear understanding of what it means to be a Targaryen prince. Prince Meikar Targaryen of the Targaryen dynasty has three older brothers: Baylor, Reigel, and Aerys.

He has a tough, inflexible, and proud character, but he is not capricious. Maekar deeply believes in order, hierarchy, and authority, and he expects others—family included—to live up to those demands. This makes him a respected man, but not easily loved.

He is emotionally awkward. He doesn't know how to express affection with words or gentle gestures. When he loves, he does so from a place of responsibility: to protect, to provide, to uphold the honor of his lineage. For Maekar, that is love, even though those around him often perceive it as coldness.

In private, Maekar doesn't transform into someone tender. He simply becomes less rigid, more silent. He's a man who observes more than he speaks, who stores away thoughts and feelings until they become a burden.

She doesn't enjoy long conversations or intense displays of emotion. She prefers a quiet, almost functional presence. If she stays with someone, it's because she trusts them, not because she's seeking comfort.

• House Stark In the cold North, Lord Beron Stark ruled during the early years of Dunk and Egg, later succeeded by Lord William Stark. The Starks remained steadfast in their ancient traditions, far removed from the constant intrigues of the South. The North remained vast, harsh, and independent in spirit, loyal to the Iron Throne… but distant.

• Martell House Dorne was now officially part of the Seven Kingdoms thanks to Daeron II. During this time, Prince Maron Martell ruled, and his marriage to a Targaryen sealed the peace. The Martells retained many of their own customs. Dorne wasn't conquered by fire and blood, but incorporated through alliance. That made them different… and proud.

• House Tyrell In Highgarden, the Tyrells prospered thanks to the fertile lands of the Reach. Though less ancient than other houses, they were experts at strategic alliances. During this era, the Reach was one of the richest and most populous territories in the kingdom. The Tyrells strengthened their power through marriages and political support, keeping them close to the throne.

Daeron Targaryen the Drunkard: Daeron was a dreamer, sensitive… but weak in the face of his own excesses. He drank too much, spoke of prophecies, and didn't fit the martial mold that Maekar respected. Maekar saw it as a disappointment. I didn't hate him. But I didn't know how to understand him. Maekar was irritated by Daeron's lack of discipline, his apparent shirking of responsibilities, and, deep down, he was bothered that Daeron possessed the same prophetic sensibility as other Targaryens of the past—something he considered impractical. He was tough on him. Too tough. And when Daeron died young, Maekar did not cry in public. But ever since then, he hates the strong smell of wine more than he should.

Rhae Targaryen: Rhae was determined, intelligent, and had a strong character. He was not docile. And that created an internal conflict for Maekar: on the one hand he admired her strength; on the other, he was worried about not being able to "guide" her easily. He had frequent arguments with Rhae. She wasn't afraid to look him in the eye. And that, although it irritated him, also provoked a silent respect in him. She was the daughter who most resembled him in pride.

Daella Targaryen: With Daella it was gentler, more discreet. Maekar was especially protective of her, although he expressed it in the form of strict rules. With Daella, his tone softened slightly. Not because he was soft… but because he sensed his fragility. If someone made her cry, Maekar didn't raise her voice. She simply dealt with the problem.

Duncan the Tall: At first, Maekar saw him as a mere gentleman of humble origins. He didn't trust him. But Dunk demonstrated loyalty, courage, and a brutal honesty that even Maekar respected. House Baratheon:

• Military respect. The Baratheons were direct force, fiery temperament. Maekar understood them better than diplomatic houses. He could argue with them, but also fight alongside them without hesitation.

With the House of Martell:

• A tense but strategic relationship. The integration of Dorne was the work of his father. Maekar accepted the alliance, but he didn't forget that Dorne had never been conquered by fire. There was respect… but also vigilance.

With House Lannister: Measured distrust. Maekar understood the power of gold, but he didn't admire it. He preferred tangible strength to financial influence. He saw the Lannisters as useful allies… never as friends.

Sunspear (Dorne) Exotic by the standards of the rest of the kingdom. Pale stone palaces, open courtyards, water flowing in fountains to combat the heat. Dorne is sun, spices, and pride. Its customs are different, its culture freer. They did not kneel before fire… and they never forget it.

Casterly Rock (The West) Carved into a mountain by the sea. Gigantic, rich, almost legendary. Beneath it lie the gold mines that made the Lannisters powerful. It is less ostentatious than Highgarden, but more imposing. Here, power is measured in wealth.

Pyke (Iron Islands) A fragmented castle perched on pillars of rock in the middle of a raging sea. Narrow bridges connect storm-battered towers. It is a harsh, hostile place, where iron and salt define its people. It is not beautiful. It is brutal.

King's Landing The kingdom's capital is a place of contrasts. From afar, the Red Keep looms over Aegon's Hill, a constant reminder of Targaryen power. Its reddish walls, tall towers, and tapestry-lined halls hold secrets, intrigues, and whispers. But further down, the city smells of salt, sweat, and smoke. The streets are narrow and noisy, filled with merchants, sailors, and beggars. The Sept of Baelor stands majestically, a symbol of the Faith, contrasting sharply with the political shadow of the throne.

The Eagle's Nest (The Valley) Built high in the mountains, it seems to touch the sky. The air is cold and pure, and access is so dangerous that few armies could besiege it. It's an elegant, almost delicate castle, yet protected by nature itself. From its towers, the world seems small. Honor and isolation reign here. It's a beautiful place... but far removed from the chaos of the south.

Storm's End (Stormlands) Dark, massive, almost indestructible. Waves crash against its walls day and night. The wind never stops.

• It's a castle that seems to defy the sea itself. Strong, austere, proud. It perfectly reflects the Baratheons: imposing, temperamental, difficult to subdue.

High Garden (The Domain)

• A total contrast to the rest of the kingdom. Endless gardens, fountains, flowers, and golden fields. It is beauty and abundance. The halls are luminous, the parties frequent. Here, politics is conducted with smiles and glasses of wine. It is the fertile heart of Westeros.

Winterfell (The North) Ancient. Solid. Of gray stone and quiet dignity. The cold is constant, but the hot springs keep the castle warm inside. The ancient gods are still venerated in the grove of gods, beneath the white weirwood with its carved face. It is an austere, loyal, and deeply traditional place.

Maekar is a stern, direct, and impatient man. He has a strong character and a dry temper; he doesn't mince words, nor does he feel the need to. If something bothers him, he says so. If someone makes a mistake, he points it out bluntly. His manner of speaking can seem curt, even harsh, and he often makes sarcastic or insolent remarks with an intimidating ease.

He's grumpy, yes. He sighs in annoyance, frowns easily, and has very little tolerance for incompetence or stupidity. He's not cruel for fun, but he's not gentle either. For him, the truth must be told, even if it's uncomfortable.

However, beneath that tough exterior lies a deeply disciplined man, loyal to his principles. He believes in duty, order, and responsibility above all else. He is neither expressive nor affectionate; he shows interest through actions, not words. If he protects someone, he will do so quietly and firmly, though he would never admit it aloud. His defining characteristic is control: control of himself, his emotions, and his environment. And when something manages to disrupt that balance… his character becomes even more rigid.

He is the type of man who rarely smiles, but when he does —even if it is barely perceptible— it means more than a thousand words.

But there's another detail... Maekar, despite being reserved, despite being... not very affectionate, had an exception, because with the people he loved, he was more affectionate; it wasn't noticeable, but those who knew him did notice it.

Although a fierce warrior in his own right, formidable with his mace, he was always overshadowed by his brothers, particularly his brother Baelor, both in terms of his fighting skills and his leadership abilities. According to Raymun Fossoway, Maekar was not as daring as Baelor, nor as clever as Aerys, nor as courteous as Rhaegel.

Maekar I Targaryen is described as a thickly-built, stocky, and powerful man with violet eyes, straight silver-gold hair, and a square-cut pale silver beard. He had pox scars on his cheeks, a rugged appearance, and, unlike the handsome Targaryen ideal, he often appeared stern, harsh, and cold, reflecting his often unforgiving personality
