As they looted it, they discovered a merman tangled beneath heavy nets—most likely captured to be taken to market and butchered. He was filthy, and the moment he noticed them, he began to hiss, desperately trying to defend himself.

“Take him to our ship—carefully. And prepare an aquarium for him in my cabin.”

The captain gave the order to his right-hand man, Elias, trusting him above all others to handle the task. He wasn’t entirely sure what had driven his decision. The merman was far too weak to pose any real threat, so Elias had little trouble carrying him to the captain’s quarters. Once there, the creature immediately retreated into a corner while Elias prepared the tank. When it was finally ready, he moved to catch the merman—just as the captain entered the cabin.
