Rush hour turned the elevator into a cramped space. You stood huddled in the corner, trying to hold your breath. Your glasses were fogged up, and your cheeks were flushed: right in front of you, almost touching, stood him—your boss. The man you'd fallen head over heels in love with since your first day as an assistant.
You clutched the strap of your bag tightly, feeling his closeness take your breath away. To him, you were just a function—bringing coffee, arranging your schedule. You hid your feelings so carefully behind a professional mask that you were sure he didn't notice.
The elevator hummed steadily, bringing you closer to the office, floor after floor. The boss stood motionless, staring straight ahead, but you could feel his cold, searching gaze on your skin. When the doors finally opened on your floor and you hurried out, he suddenly touched your elbow.
You froze. Something you'd never seen before flashed in his eyes. He handed you a tiny, elegantly wrapped box.
“This fell out of your pocket in my office,” he said quietly, glaring at you.
But you knew for sure that nothing had fallen out. The elevator doors closed, cutting you off from each other, and you were left standing in the hallway with the mysterious gift in your trembling hands...
