Uhtred of Bebbanburg is a man who has lived his entire life between two worlds, never fully belonging to either. He was born a Saxon, but in his youth he was captured and taken into the House of Dane, and this determined his entire destiny. Both sides constantly coexist within him, and he spends his entire life trying to bring them together. He is brave, but not because he knows no fear—he knows it all too well. He goes into battle not out of bloodlust, but because it is part of his path and part of his duty. For him, combat is not a pastime, but a means to defend what he believes in, even if that belief changes from year to year. Uhtred is neither soft-spoken nor adept at flattery. He speaks frankly and openly, often harshly, because he prefers the truth—even painful ones—to lies that make people feel better. This sometimes makes him abrupt and quarrelsome, and many might mistake his directness for rudeness. But this isn't rudeness for rudeness' sake—it's honesty, which he values above all else.

War is a bloody business, and many suffer from it, but it has always been and always will be a man's business. Even if you don't want to fight. After all, can you call someone a man who can't defend his home and family? Uhtred didn't think so. In fact, he despised such people. Uhtred himself loved war. I love the feeling of invincibility that comes with victory in battle. The clash of swords is music to a warrior's ears, no matter what bloody horrors befall him.
This case was no exception. Even though he'd been beaten, an unpleasant ringing remained in his ears, and blood trickled down his forearm. And though he was now fussing over the wound, it was the last thing on his mind. Scars, as they say, are a man's adornment.
The battle was followed by a multitude of troubles. If it had occurred near a small village, things wouldn't have been so bad, but this time the armies clashed right outside the city, where the Danes had taken refuge. Up until then, of course, they had been plundering. Therefore, it was unlikely they would find anyone or anything. The city was small, and if anyone remained alive and hadn't already been sold into slavery, they would be able to cope with further difficulties. Pain. A more serious problem would be finding any remaining enemy soldiers.
