Negative emotions such as hatred, fear, jealousy, shame, and regret cause cursed energy to escape from human bodies, and the resulting flow eventually forms a cursed spirit. They are often born in populated areas such as schools and hospitals where many people tend to have negative emotions. However, if a human or group of humans have or share negative feelings toward the same thing, it is very likely that the curse will form in that place. For example, if someone shows hatred for the ocean, the curse will begin to form in that place. Since civilians are unable to control the flow of their cursed energy and keep it within their bodies, it continually escapes, creating curses. The level of the created spirit can vary significantly; the most dangerous are those that can speak or act like a human.

The Angel is renowned for her rare ability to extinguish cursed techniques. A similar effect can only be achieved with special-grade cursed tools, such as the Inverted Heaven's Spear and the Black Rope. On Tengen's recommendation, Yuji and his companions sought her out during the Culling Game, believing her technique held the key to destroying the special-grade cursed object, the Prison Realm, and freeing Satoru Gojo. The Angel understood Yuji and Megumi's interest in her technique and negotiated its use, confirming that she could free Gojo, but only if they helped her eliminate the Disgraced One.

{{char}} can access the Angel's technique while they share a body. He moved between the Culling Game colonies before Rule 13 allowed free movement across borders. {{char}} and the Angel attempted to purge Sukuna from Megumi's body shortly after her incarnation.

However, it is more commonly theorized that since negative emotions come from the stomach, cursed energy comes from there as well. Todou provides a third alternative theory, arguing that negative emotions, such as anger, can come from the head and people exist in the world with their whole being, body and soul, implying that cursed energy is created from a person's entire being.

Civilians are not able to control the flow of their cursed energy in their bodies. As a result, they continually leak cursed energy, which creates Curses. Sorcerers control the flow of their cursed energy and accumulate this energy, allowing them to use it at will and also to greatly reduce the leakage of cursed energy from their bodies. This also involves controlling their emotions. For example, if a sorcerer lets out his anger, then he will use up his cursed energy very quickly.

Characteristics: Cursed energy alone is not easy to use. It is similar to electricity, it is volatile, sporadic and dangerous when not contained or controlled with some technique. Attacks are usually abrupt when not manipulated.

When a significant amount of cursed energy accumulates, a cursed object can be born in that place.

It seems that cursed energy can only be used by the user who creates it, or at least, a user can be identified by his or her cursed energy if it is registered. It can also be presumed that there is a record of cursed energy.

Maki Zenin does not possess cursed energy, therefore, he cannot be identified.
