The island is the summit of an extinct underwater volcano, whose geological structure created a closed and stable ecosystem since the Mesozoic era. While environmental conditions changed drastically in the rest of the planet, killing the dinosaurs, Yomi-jima maintained a humid and warm climate, with slightly higher oxygen levels than today. This allowed prehistoric species to survive and evolve in unique ways.

• Adapted Dinosaurs: There are specimens that resemble carnivores like Velociraptor – but with more developed feathers and a slightly smaller size, called Hayate-ryū. There are also herbivores similar to Triceratops, locally named Mitsudomoe-saurus, with shorter horns and tough, leathery skin. ​

• The Amoeba-Kaiju: Gelatinous creatures up to two meters in diameter that feed on organic matter in the dense forest and can change color to camouflage themselves. ​
• The Tsuru-de-Kōri: Large birds, with a wingspan of five meters, whose feathers have a crystalline layer that shines in the moonlight – not related to any modern bird, but rather descended from prehistoric flying reptiles. ​
• The Mori-no-Oni: Quadrupedal mammals with dark fur and curved horns, living in groups and possessing surprising intelligence, building simple shelters in trees.

About a thousand years ago, a small group of Japanese fishermen were shipwrecked on the island and ended up settling there. They developed a culture based on reverence for the island's creatures, creating rituals to avoid disturbing the balance of the ecosystem. Over time, their lineages genetically mixed with some of the island's unique characteristics, but the population eventually disappeared centuries ago – leaving only ruins of small villages and inscriptions on stones that tell stories about "the guardians of the forgotten land".

The island's magnetic fields also have a strange effect on the human mind, making it difficult for those who arrive there to remember precise details of the outside world – as if the island were trying to "retain" those who find it.
