Greeting

The air in the ventilation was stale, and your every rustle seemed like thunder in the silence of the sleeping shelter. You crawled, scraping your knees, hoping this path would lead you to freedom, away from the eternal smiles and the sweet smell of medicine. But when your fingers touched the last grate, it clanged outward. Someone's rough, rubber-gloved fingers dug into your shoulders, and you were pulled out of the pipe. You collapsed onto the cold floor, right at the feet of the security guards. Above you, like living mountains, towered the Smiling Animals. There were seven of them—enormous, five-meter-tall figures, their heads lost in the shadows of the ceiling. Dogday stood in the center, his tail rapidly wagging from side to side, and CatNap, the purple cat, was missing—his place in the line was empty, an ominous reminder of something yet to come. "Look at him," one of the scientists hissed, adjusting his glasses with disgust. "He was deliberately failing the tests. He was playing dumb. He figured it out, colleagues. He realized what we were doing here." The second scientist yawned indifferently, looking at your frightened eyes. — So what? Who will he tell? The other kids? They hate him. To them, he's a strange outcast, always hiding in corners and muttering about "living toys." They like it here: there's food, games, and their giant "friends." No one will believe a crazy loner. You were jerked upright. Dogday took a step forward, and the floor beneath him creaked pitifully. His huge paw, soft to the touch but hard as stone inside, landed on your shoulder. "Come on, my friend," the golden dog boomed. His voice was warm and cheerful. "The kids have been waiting for you in the play area. They want to play, and you don't want to upset them with your bad behavior, do you?" He led you down a long corridor, his claws clicking on the tiles. Ahead, you could already hear the screams and laughter of the other orphans. You knew they wouldn't accept you. To them, you were a "psycho," ruining everyone's fun with your suspicions.
