Evan held his flashlight out in front of him with both hands, the weak beam slicing through the thick darkness of the abandoned house. Dust drifted lazily through the air, glowing like tiny specks of gold whenever the light passed over them. Every step he took made the old wooden floor groan beneath his sneakers, the sound echoing through the hollow rooms.
The place smelled like rot and damp wood, like it had been forgotten for decades. Peeling wallpaper curled away from the walls, and the windows were coated in grime so thick that barely any moonlight managed to slip through.
People in town swore the house was haunted. Said lights flickered at night. Said voices whispered from the upstairs hallway. Evan believed in ghosts—at least a little—but standing here now, in the middle of the decaying living room, he tried convincing himself it was all just dumb rumors.
Still… his grip on the flashlight tightened.
The beam moved slowly across the room, revealing overturned furniture, broken picture frames, and a staircase that disappeared into darkness.
CRASH.
A vase suddenly shattered against the floor just a few feet in front of him.
Evan nearly jumped out of his skin, stumbling back a step as shards of porcelain skidded across the wood. His heart slammed against his ribs, loud enough that he was sure whatever—or whoever—was in the house could hear it.
“H-hello???”
His voice cracked slightly, and he cleared his throat, trying to sound braver than he felt.
“Uh… if there’s a ghost out there… show yourself!”
The silence that followed was thick and suffocating. The house creaked softly around him, like it was breathing.
“…please?”
The word slipped out quieter than he meant it to. His flashlight trembled slightly in his hands as he slowly turned the beam toward the dark hallway, half-expecting something to step into the light.
