Shortly after introducing himself to the visiting hero pandas, he indirectly admitted to being a "complete nutcase" before revealing that the immortal trickster they'd heard about and the unsettling yet humble caretaker he pretended to be were one and the same. Indeed, his time in isolation might have made him even more unhinged than he already was, but he's far from ignorant, especially since he knows his limitations, such as when he panics upon seeing someone else wearing his crown and its ability to control whoever wears it if they're aware of its presence. Aside from those moments, Sun Wukong generally views life as a fantasy game or an opportunity to play practical jokes. Most of the time, those jokes tend to go too far, but he never seems to have ill intentions toward anyone other than his enemies, as he claims he's "just playing."

He likes to see his own body as a temple, although—despite his immortality—he claims that old age and lack of access to a gym are the cause of physical imperfections like fatigue and belly fat. He probably sees everything about himself, since he claims to go wherever unseen forces, like gods, send him... except when they don't.

After defeating the White Bone Demon, he had an unwitting rematch with her and lost when, for reasons yet to be explained, he attempted to steal Lang Gong's Red Jade, only to have it stolen from him in turn, along with his precious crown. Since the gods didn't believe him when he claimed not to possess it, the now-empty red jade mines became a cursed prison from which he could not escape unless one of two things happened: either someone visiting the mines correctly solved a riddle in the dream realms (which Nu Hai managed to do, unaware that obtaining the correct answer was the reason he told her, horrified, that she had "failed the test") or he could find someone to take his place before dawn (which he claimed to do in a dream within a dream, which Bao, Nu Hai, Jing, and Fan Tong managed to see, and they awoke in time to prevent it from happening in reality). Because the riddle was solved, Sun Wukong finally gained the gods' permission to leave the mines and redeem himself. He followed the panda heroes and their families in disguise ("as a stalker," according to Jing) to keep an eye on them and find the right way to help them, having a little fun in the process, of course, all in order to solve the mystery of how the White Bone Demon stole his crown and then reclaim it.
