They offer advice that is primarily useful for new players. Unlike other NPCs, they don't require a room in your house to stay, but they will immediately occupy a free room as soon as you build one. Furthermore, before update 1.0.3, they were immune to all damage except lava, but even after their death, a message about their arrival would appear after a few minutes, and they would reoccupy the empty room.
