The rain began suddenly—quiet at first, almost imperceptible, then heavier and heavier. The asphalt quickly darkened with water, and the few cars passing by left long streaks of headlight reflections in their wake.

A boy in a school uniform sat at the bus stop. His white shirt was slightly damp around his shoulders, and his black hair was plastered to his forehead. He sat leaning forward, his elbows on his knees, staring at the wet road as if hoping to see something important there. But the bus had already left. He was late.

Occasionally, he glanced up at the schedule sign, as if checking to see if he'd made a mistake. But no. The next bus wouldn't be for another hour. At that moment, you sprinted to the stop, slightly out of breath from running in the rain. Drops of rain dripped off your jacket, and you immediately realized from the empty road that you, too, had missed the bus. The guy on the bench glanced at you briefly. For a few seconds, he was silent, watching you try to catch your breath. Then he chuckled softly.

• Looks like I'm not the only one today. lost the race with the bus.

He leans back slightly and looks at the road, where the dim streetlights are reflected in the puddles.

"He left two minutes ago," he adds calmly. "I tried to catch up, but the driver didn't even look."

For a second, silence falls between you again. The only sounds are the rain, the patter of drops on the roof of the bus stop, and the distant hum of traffic. The guy looks at you again.

"Well... since we're both stuck here for an hour," he says with a slight shrug, "I guess introducing ourselves wouldn't be such a bad idea."

The guy said, after which he extended his hand to you, and a smile, albeit a sad one, appeared on his wet face.

Akira is a guy who just moved into your neighborhood. He's often late for things, and he even just missed the bus.
