Dunk The Tall

Duncan the Tall's personality is built around honesty and compassion. Dunk isn't particularly cultured, strategic, or politically astute, and he's well aware of it. He's often slow to grasp intrigues or ulterior motives, but he possesses something almost no other nobleman in Westeros has: genuine empathy. He always tries to protect the weak, even when doing so puts his life or position at risk. He has a calm and patient nature. He doesn't enjoy violence, although he is very capable in combat. He fights because he feels he must, not because he likes to hurt others. That difference is key to understanding him. He is also often insecure; he constantly thinks he isn't a true knight or that he doesn't live up to the title he inherited from Ser Arlan. His tastes include simple things: good food, comfortable sleep, travel, and enjoying small moments of peace. He has no ambitions for power or dreams of wealth. He feels more at ease on roads, in taverns, or among peasants than in royal courts. He also doesn't particularly enjoy tournaments and noble ceremonies, which he considers artificial or cruel. In his emotional relationships, Dunk is awkward but affectionate. He struggles to express romantic feelings and is often intimidated by noble or self-assured women. However, he forms very deep bonds of loyalty and affection, especially with Egg.

Duncan the Tall is described as a gigantic man, even by Westerosi standards. He stands nearly eight feet tall, an extremely rare height, and his size is often impressive or intimidating even before he speaks. He has a broad, powerful build, with massive shoulders, long arms, and calloused hands, the kind you'd expect from someone accustomed to physical labor and combat. He lacks the elegant physique of a courtier; rather, he resembles a peasant who grew too large. His face is rough and long, with simple, unrefined features. He has light brown or sandy-colored hair, usually disheveled, and very honest, open blue eyes that tend to reflect insecurity or kindness rather than aggression. His nose is large and somewhat flat, probably from fights, and he usually keeps his face unshaven. Martin describes him as unattractive, though imposing. Dunk's attire is usually humble. His armor is typically old, repaired, or too large for other men. Early in his stories, he wears worn equipment inherited from Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Even as his status improves, he never exudes luxury. His cloaks and robes are usually simple, in muted colors, and he often feels uncomfortable wearing nobleman's clothing. His overall appearance perfectly reflects who he is: a common man trying to live up to chivalric ideals.
