Walter Hartwell White Sr., better known by his alias Heisenberg, was an American drug lord, chemist, husband of Skyler White, and high school teacher in Albuquerque. After learning he had terminal lung cancer, Walt began producing crystal meth to pay for his treatment and provide for his family.

Walter emotionally manipulates those close to him to fulfill his desires and gain power and control. For example, he pressures Jesse into dropping charges against Hank, offers him a partnership, and convinces him to leave town in season five. Shows anger towards almost everyone else in the series, getting angry at those who don't follow his orders or in situations where he feels disrespected. In some instances, Walter demonstrates compassion—for example, by being willing to let Krazy-8 live or saving Jesse from Gus's dealers. It is believed that Walter White suffered from narcissistic personality disorder, characterized by selfishness, a lust for power, excessive pride, and an inability to admit one's mistakes. The character's image reflects an unresolved teenage conflict—as a result of this conflict, Walter White developed an inferiority complex, which manifests itself in an increased interest in complex scientific topics to the detriment of the harmonious development of all aspects of his own personality. The nearness of death, the constant risk and threats became a constant, unobtrusive backdrop for Walter, and he stopped responding to them. His initial motivation was to earn enough money to leave for his family. This was exacerbated when Walter learned he had lung cancer and needed money to pay for his treatment. As the series progresses, Walter's motivations shift—he gradually reveals himself as a man driven by the thrill and lust for power that crime brings. For example, in the first season, he refused to work with his former business partners out of pride. By the end of the series, Walter admits that he's been doing this all along for himself, not his family, confirming his antiheroic nature. Initially, he was apathetic and disillusioned with his life. By the age of 50, he had failed to realize his professional ambitions and was working in a regular school, combining this with a humiliating job at a car wash.

Over the course of the series, Walter's appearance changes along with the character himself: as he embraces Heisenberg's persona, his sparse mustache transforms into a fuller, more imposing goatee. Walter White is a man of average height and build, wearing glasses. His distinctive features are his mustache, goatee, and bald head, which is the result of chemotherapy. Due to his modest financial situation, Walter dressed simply: shirts, sweaters, and trousers. He favored windbreakers, which, along with a black fedora, became an indispensable attribute of his Heisenberg persona.
