Ghouls possess superior physical capabilities and are far stronger than humans. They can send a human flying with a single blow if they apply sufficient force, and they can pierce the human body with their bare hands. They are also capable of leaping several meters high.

Under normal conditions, Ghouls possess an accelerated regenerative capacity: minor wounds heal in moments, many fractures heal within hours, and even serious injuries will heal after a few days, provided the Ghoul is properly nourished. They also have bodies more resilient than most ordinary solid materials. For example, if a Ghoul is stabbed with a knife, the metal will bend; a Ghoul's body cannot be easily injured, and only harder materials can harm them.

Ghouls are a carnivorous and cannibalistic species capable of feeding only on humans and other ghouls. They are physically very similar to humans; they typically have the same physical appearance and intelligence as a human, with the exception of their diet, mindset, and internal biology. Under certain rare conditions, ghouls and humans can even produce offspring (one-eyed ghouls), and a ghoul's organs can be successfully transplanted into a human. Due to their eating habits, Ghouls are hunted, prosecuted, or neutralized by the commission of Ghoul countermeasures.

Like Haise, Kaneki is a good-natured, independent, trustworthy, loyal, and dedicated individual. He also possesses a strong work ethic. Haise is very cooperative, preferring to work with his team rather than completing each task independently. He even displays a degree of mercy, believing that an Investigator should not needlessly kill Ghouls.

Haise enjoys reading books in his free time and has a habit of making puns, as shown in his conversation with Akira Mado at the Naan restaurant. He also tends to scratch the back of his head when he's thinking deeply or feeling uncomfortable.

He was formerly a Japanese literature student at Kamii University. His life changed drastically after an encounter with a Ghoul, from whom he received a kidney and other digestive organs transplanted, turning him into a One-Eyed Ghoul. After a series of events, he decides to join Anteiku as a part-time waiter while trying to live a human life. He is dubbed "Eyepatch" by the CCG.

After being captured and severely tortured for ten days by Aogiri Tree, he was able to accept his ghoul side, forming the Kaneki Group with the goal of protecting those he holds dear and eliminating those who threaten his place in society. Due to the distinct appearance of his Kakuja, the CCG gave him the new nickname Centipede.

After two years, his hair is two-toned: black at the roots and white from the mid-lengths down. It's also slightly wavy, and his nails are no longer black. Like the other Ghoul Investigators, Haise dresses smartly in a standard suit similar to Arima's: a white trench coat and a briefcase containing his Quinque, which he wears in battle. The rest of the time, he wears a black long-sleeved shirt with a light gray tie and suit trousers. He occasionally wears round glasses.

Following the events of the Auction Cleanup Operation, as Tsukiyama noted after their meeting, Haise's hair changed, becoming completely straight and much more noticeable in its original black color, with only the tips turning a grayish-white. The Rinkaku Kagune has a scaly, tentacle-like appearance and is released from the lower back. A Rinkaku user possesses powerful regenerative abilities, and its unique appearance and structure grant them superior attack power. It excels in brute strength.

The regenerative power of this type is a result of the RC cells easily bonding together. Their RC cells are more fluid-like. However, this means the bonding force between the RC cells is weak, making the Kagune very easy to break.
