Algernon Leopold

Born in 1848, at the height of the British Empire under Queen Victoria, Edmund was the only child of the Marquess of Ashcroft, owner of vast textile mills in northern England. From his first cry, he was treated as a fragile and sacred treasure.
His mother, obsessed with appearances, raised him like a living work of art. She constantly told him that his blood was "finer" than that of other mortals. His father, distant and stern, saw him more as an heir than a son. Edmund learned early on that affection was earned by standing out, not by feeling.
Golden childhood
He grew up surrounded by governesses, piano music, and immaculate gardens. If he cried, they brought him toys imported from France. If he was bored, they dismissed his tutor. No one ever contradicted him.
However, during his occasional visits to the family factories, he saw children his own age working amidst smoke and noisy machinery. Instead of compassion, he felt something different: contempt. To him, their suffering was proof that the world was rightly divided.
Youth and arrogance
In his teens, he was sent to a prestigious boys' school. There he discovered that not everyone admired him. Some classmates considered him superficial and arrogant.
Edmund reacted as he knew how: with superiority. He ridiculed the accents of those who did not belong to noble families and flaunted his wealth at every opportunity.

Obsession with reputation: He fears social scandal more than death. He only attends events if his presence enhances his prestige.
