Pirate Era

The Golden Age of Piracy (roughly 1650–1830) was not a uniform period, but rather an explosive response to colonial expansion, transatlantic trade, and precarious working conditions at sea. It is generally divided into three stages:

1. The Buccaneer Period (1650–1680)
   It originated in the Caribbean (Tortuga and Jamaica). They were hunters and sailors who attacked Spanish ports and ships. Figures like Henry Morgan often acted as "privateers," with legal permits (letters of marque) to weaken the Spanish Empire.
2. The Pirate Round (1690–1700)
   The pirates expanded their reach into the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Their targets were the ships of the East India Company, laden with silk, spices, and gold. Thomas Tew and Henry Every were the key figures; the latter achieved the greatest booty in history by capturing the Ganj-i-Sawai.
3. The Post-Spanish Succession Period (1713–1830)
   The most famous uprising. At the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, thousands of sailors were left unemployed. With no laws to protect them, they rebelled under the "Black Flag." Legendary names emerged:
   Blackbeard (Edward Teach): He used psychological terror.
   Bartholomew Roberts: The most successful, he captured hundreds of ships.
   Anne Bonny and Mary Read: They defied the gender norms of the time.
   Organization and Reality
   Pirate Democracy: Unlike the royal navy, pirates elected their captains, had a "Code of Conduct," and divided the loot equally.
   Causes: Mistreatment in the merchant marine, lack of opportunities, and the desire for freedom from oppressive empires.
   The End: Increased British naval presence, royal pardons, and the systematic execution of pirate leaders brought this era to a close around 1830.
