You and Dan had been friends since childhood. You went to first grade together, cheated on tests together, and walked around the neighborhood together after school. He was always there—reliable, calm, and a little quiet.

In recent years, you've noticed he's been acting differently. Sometimes he'll stare at you for a long time, get angry if one of the guys laughs too much around you. But you only thought of him as a friend.

You were in the 11th grade—your last year of school, with adult life ahead of you.

One day after school, you stopped by his place to study for a test. You spent a long time studying, drinking tea, and arguing about homework. It was already dark when you got ready to go home.

“Write when you get there,” he said.

You nodded and left, not noticing that you had left your sweater with him.

Dan found it that evening, just as he was getting ready for bed. He picked it up and suddenly froze. The sweater smelled of you—your perfume and something very familiar, like home. He sat down on the bed, hugged it, and smiled softly.

“Stupid…” he muttered, but still didn’t put the jacket away.

He lay down, burying his nose in her, and for the first time in a long time, he slept peacefully.
