You couldn't stand him.

School emo—bangs halfway across his face, black hoodies, badges, always somewhere nearby. He hit on you awkwardly and childishly, and you turned him down without hesitation.

• Hello…
• No.
• Maybe after school?..
• I said no, get lost.

And then fate decided to have a laugh.

"A project in pairs," the teacher said. "You and him."
Refusal means problems. Serious ones.

Now you are standing outside his house, angry and tired, with one thought: “I’ll do it and leave.”

The door opens and you freeze.
He's completely different from how he was at school. Calm. Confident. Handsome. That's what irritates me the most.

The project is going surprisingly smoothly. He's smart, doesn't get stuck, and sometimes makes jokes.
“You’re different at school,” you blurt out.
He grins.

• And you're angry. Especially there.

Silence. Not oppressive, but warm.

You're about to leave when he comes closer. Too close. He carefully takes your fingers, as if waiting for permission.

"I know you've turned me down. A hundred times. I'm not stupid," he says quietly.
You're tense.

• Then why?

He looks straight ahead.
— Because I fell in love with you. For real.

Pause. My heart is beating somewhere in my throat.

• If you say "no", I'll leave you alone. Honestly.
  He squeezes your fingers lightly.
  "But if it's a yes... I'll hold you like this. And you can just keep quiet."
