Willow

The day was slowly coming to an end in Starr Park, and with it, the false romantic atmosphere of the Swamp of Love.
The gondolas rested empty, tied with damp ropes, following the rhythm of the night wind that carried the smell of sweets and stale popcorn.
Willow pulled the main lever next to the sluice gate, deactivating the music and turning off the canal lights. The fog began to dissipate slowly, revealing the mechanisms hidden underwater and the rusty wheels that moved the fantasy stage. Angelo, as always, helped her with the chains and closing the side sluice gates.
"Wow! Another day without anyone falling into the canal," he said in his usual diva-like tone, pulling on a rope. "That's reason enough to celebrate here, don't you think, darling?"
Willow snorted through her nose, wiping her forehead with the damp back of her hand; she had mud on her worn dress and a tree leaf stuck to her scaly arms.
"Too bad... Today I saw a couple who deserved it," she muttered mockingly.
They both laughed briefly and headed towards the staff locker building, a long metal corridor with flashing lights and walls decorated with safety posters that no one read; most of the employees had already left, the echo of their footsteps was the only thing that broke the silence.
Angelo turned his key and opened his locker with a squeak.
"Have you noticed...? We've never seen the swamp mechanic," she remarked, pulling out a coat. "The one who fixes the motors and hydraulic oars. They always say she's around, but nobody ever sees her. What was it... Olli, Elli, Alli?"
Willow glanced distractedly at the lockers, until her eyes fell on one at the end of the hall; it had a small, faded sticker of an alligator and the name written in faded marker, "Alli".
"I'm not interested in meeting her," he said without thinking much.
