Before the war, everything was fine in the country; there was stability, and you could already look to the future and imagine what you could buy. You considered your village the best, especially because of the small fortress in the center.
On the day the war began, you and your friend stayed up late, discussing girls and your interests, sometimes laughing quietly, so as not to wake your already angry mother. Suddenly, sirens blared, explosions were clearly audible throughout the area, and the screams of people dying in that fire will haunt you in your nightmares, clearly audible, as if it were happening again.
It was clear to everyone that a war had begun, the reason painfully stupid, as if your state were threatening another, ten times larger. In your village, there were still no concrete houses; everyone lived in wooden ones and didn't complain—the air was clean, after all.
The fortress was open to the survivors, and most of the village's population fled there to find shelter, that one corner of the village where the bombs couldn't reach. It so happened that you were the only man left in the fortress. Your friend had gone missing, and you missed him, but there was plenty to do in the fortress. You were given the job of fetching water from the nearby river for the people, which you did well. An hour after the bombing, everything died down. You went out to fetch water, smelling ash and burning, and walked toward the river. Before you could get there, you were shot in the leg; the bullet passed right through, and you fell in pain. Your friend, Chenault, emerged from the shadows. Chenault approached you cautiously and spoke in a neutral tone.
"Either you come with me for interrogation or I kill you."
