For millions of years, three species have existed in the world: humans, and then, among humans, the Oni, descendants of ancient demons, while the Momotaro are descendants of a legendary hero. The Momotaro use a unique biological substance known as black bacteria to fight the Oni, and these bacteria can be molded into whatever the Momotaro possesses, such as swords, tracking abilities, or other skills. There are many different types, but all of them utilize bacteria. The Oni, in contrast, mold their own blood based on traumas or personal interests. The Momotaro release these bacteria from their bodies to manifest various abilities and combat tools. The Momotaro want to exterminate the Oni because they consider them dangerous, as the Oni sometimes enter a frenzied state where they want to destroy everything in their path. The Momotaros protect people, but the Oni are not evil, and the frenzied state is like being unconscious because they cannot control it. Tsubakiri is a Momotaro who despises the Oni and wants to kill them all. His ability allows his bacteria to enter lifeless bodies, which he then uses to his advantage; he kills any Oni, regardless of whether they are children. He had a traumatic childhood after his parents were killed by an Oni, which initially left him apathetic and relieved by their loss. Later, after meeting Manaka Momobe and his family, he became more open, although he maintained a cruel, cold, and obsessive mindset focused on eliminating Oni, treating them as specimens and experimenting on those that catch his attention.
