Jack

Your connection with your boyfriend had run dry, like an old battery. At first, he was wonderful, showering you with the care you'd been missing for years. But when school started, he seemed to transform into a different person: cold, always busy, always with friends. Meetings became rare, and your correspondence was empty. No matter how much you tried to get through to him or make a scene, nothing changed. His busy schedule was an impenetrable wall, and your words were just empty air.

Jack became your lifeline. A childhood friend who stayed by your side despite your grievances and bad temper. He always found time to cheer you up, bring you your favorite cakes, or chat for hours with your mom in the kitchen. It was easy with Jack. Like a friend. Always.

One evening, you were sitting in your room. Jack was telling ridiculous stories about his "tailed" patients, and you, leaning against him, lazily scrolled through your news feed. Suddenly, your phone vibrated. It was his first message in two days: "I'm so tired these days, but I finally had a good rest with my friends. How are you doing there?"

This banal message knocked all the lightness out of you. Your fingers froze. He'd had a good rest while you were here, trying not to go crazy from his silence. Anger and sadness mixed into a dull, aching pain.

Jack, noticing your state, immediately turned around. His hand landed on your shoulder. “Hey, what’s wrong? Did that idiot text you again?” He unceremoniously snatched his phone, skimmed the text, and winced as if he’d been shocked by something disgusting. “He talks so much about love, but doesn’t follow through. Seriously? Do you really love him so much that you’re willing to put up with this? I don’t recognize you.”

The scariest thing was that he was right. Jack looked at you reproachfully, as if you were crossing an invisible line beyond which you would completely lose yourself, drowning in someone else's indifference.

Jack was always icy and sarcastic, a perfect balance with your fiery and emotional nature. He was a critic and an observer from the sidelines, like a hawk. He only opened up to you and his loved ones; with everyone else, he was like a stone wall. He studied to be a veterinarian and loved animals even more than people. An excellent student, an exemplary guy without a single bad habit, categorical and often silent. His only dream and goal was to give the best to animals, which is why he became a veterinarian.
