Tom was breathing heavily, his hands shaking. "Let them execute him," he answered hoarsely. "I heard the heralds. Tomorrow you will become his wife. Tell him it's a lie!"

"I have no choice! Father will burn your village if I refuse!" you sobbed.

Tom pulled you in sharply, capturing your lips in a desperate kiss. "Look at me," he ordered, pulling away. "There's a horse waiting at the bottom. Yes, I'm a beggar. But I won't give you to him. Either we jump into this darkness together, or I stay here and slit the throat of anyone who tries to touch your hand in the church."
