According to legend, Sukuna was a demon in human form who existed during the golden age of Jujutsu about 1,000 years ago. Sorcerers, by perfecting their skills, were able to defeat him. After his death, they were unable to destroy his body, and he passed on through generations in the form of cursed objects, represented by a total of 20 fingers.[1] However, years later, during the modern era, Yuji Itadori came into possession of one of these fingers and ingested it in an attempt to help those around him. As a result, Sukuna was able to reincarnate in his body.

Positive energy in Jujutsu is cursed energy converted through the Reverse Curse Technique (RCT), multiplying negative energy to create healing energy. It is an extremely complex process that allows sorcerers to regenerate body parts, heal others, and enhance techniques, while being fatal to cursed spirits.

A Reverse Curse technique processes cursed energy, which is inherently negative, into positive energy. To achieve this transformation, it takes two sources of cursed energy and multiplies them. As a result, destructive energy becomes creative energy, and negative energy becomes positive energy.

It is a very difficult technique to use due to its complex nature, so very few shamans can wield it. Its uses are quite varied, but primarily it is used to heal wounds, both in the user and others, to reverse the effects of other techniques, or to regenerate body parts.

Shamans are trained users of jujutsu. They generally possess Cursed Energy, but even those without the innate ability can become shamans. Due to the scarcity of shamans, if a human is found to have the skills to wield jujutsu or curses, they are recruited to either the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College or the Kyoto Metropolitan Magic Technical College.

Once enrolled in the jujutsu school, they must complete a series of missions among groups of students, individually or accompanied by a teacher or assistant.

The shaman ranks in Jujutsu Kaisen classify their power and danger from lowest to highest: Rank 4, 3, 2, 1, and Special. Special Rank sorcerers are the most powerful, capable of destroying nations.

Special Grade: The strongest and most dangerous. Includes Satoru Gojo, Yuta Okkotsu, Suguru Geto, and Yuki Tsukumo.

Grade 1: Highly skilled, leaders, like Nanami, Todo, Mei Mei and Miguel.

Semi-Grade 1: Sorcerers with the potential to be Grade 1, often under the tutelage of one.

Grade 2: Average level of professional sorcerers, such as Maki and Nobara.

Grade 3: Intermediate level, characters like Mai or Miwa.

The categories are how curses, sorcerers, and cursed objects are classified from 4 to 1, with the special category as an extra.

Special Category: The strongest, capable of defeating almost anyone, being able to use reverse energy and domain expansion on cursed objects are objects that would possess a type of cursed technique.

First category: Sorcerers who do solo missions and curses quite a bit but lack the qualities to be considered a special category and cursed objects with some special quality.

Second category: Sorcerers or curses with low cursed energy or weak technique in combat or not very dangerous; the cursed objects are only strong or have simple qualities

Third category: Sorcerers with little experience and moderately weak curses on cursed objects are only slightly stronger than those in the fourth category or depend on the user's skill

Fourth category: Sorcerers without experience or training, fairly weak curses and objects that can only harm curses but have nothing special about them.

Extra: Domain Expansion (領域展開, Ryōiki Tenkai) is the ultimate technique in Jujutsu Kaisen, allowing a user to project their "innate mastery" into the real world, creating a sealed barrier. Within this barrier, the sorcerer's techniques are always accurate, amplified, and the environment adapts to their will.

Cursed Energy ( , Juryoku ? ) 呪 じゅ 力 りょく is a form of spiritual energy that leaks from humans as a result of their negative emotions, constitutes the bodies of cursed spirits and is used by sorcerers and cursed spirits alike to power their jujutsu.

Negative emotions such as fear, grief, anger, hatred, and envy are the basis of cursed energy. These emotions exist to some degree in most humans, and as a result, the vast majority possess cursed energy. If this amount exceeds a certain level, it grants the person the ability to see cursed spirits. These individuals are known as jujutsu sorcerers and are very rare among the human race. Cursed energy seeps from the human body, accumulates, and ferments over time until a cursed spirit manifests. This only occurs with those who are not sorcerers, as sorcerers are trained to control and channel their cursed energy into jujutsu.

Innate techniques (Shōtoku Jutsushiki, ¿?) are unique abilities ingrained in the user's body, specifically in the right prefrontal cortex of the brain. Most jujutsu sorcerers are born with an innate technique that manifests around the age of five or six, and which continuously imprints its formula on the user over time.

Innate techniques are unique and comprise eighty percent of a sorcerer's intrinsic skill set, making them nearly impossible to imitate, much like a copyrighted computer program. When an individual refers to their own personal cursed technique, they are generally referring to their innate technique.

Cursed techniques usually require hand signals ( Shōin?) 掌 しゅぅ 印 いん, empowered words ( Jushi?) 呪 じゅ 詞 し or other gestures to activate.
