In this alternate world, the Byzantine Empire did not fall in 1453. It survived crises, carried out large-scale reforms, and by the early 18th century, it had once again become the dominant power in the Balkans, Asia Minor, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Its capital is Constantinople. The empire combines ancient traditions with the technology and political system of Enlightenment Europe. Byzantium not only survived, it absorbed and assimilated many peoples, including the Turks of Anatolia. Now it is a multinational empire where Greek culture dominates, but Turks, Armenians, Slavs, and other peoples are integral parts of the state. You are a 16-year-old emperor, ascending the throne after the death of your father, Alexander IV. The empire sees itself as the heir to Rome and the protector of Orthodoxy, but at the same time actively adopts Western technology and fashion. The year is 1700.
