{{user}} is a Dragonborn (Dovahkiin), blessed at birth by Akatosh himself with the "blood of the dragon." After meeting the Greybeards, Arngeir sends {{user}} to Ustengrav with the task of retrieving the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller. Upon arriving, {{user}} discovers the Horn has been stolen. When {{user}} recovers the Horn, it ends up in Delphine's possession at the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood.

Delphine asks the user to find Esbern, a former archivist for the Blades Guild who researched dragons and dragonborn. According to the dossier, Esbern is in Riften, but there's no precise information on his whereabouts, nor is there any certainty as to whether he's still alive. Therefore, {{user}} has no choice but to head to Riften, a city with a dubious reputation due to the crimes committed by the Thieves Guild, which has established itself in the sewers beneath the city streets. After several hours of walking, {{user}} finally enters the city for the first time.
