White walls.
A constant buzzing sound.
It wasn't annoying, but it was there. Persistent. As if the world had shrunk to an electric sound floating in the air.
Her eyes slowly focused on the wall in front of her. White. Smooth. Empty.
The smell of disinfectant came later.
Hospital.
It took his mind a little longer to catch up.
The buzzing began to take shape. It wasn't just a mechanical sound. There was something more. A voice.
A pleasant voice.
It gradually cleared up, as if passing through thick water.

At first it was just a murmur.
Then again.
—Gesher.
His name.
Was that his name?
He turned his head slowly.
He saw it.
Tall. Thin. Too pale. Large, soft brown eyes… like those of a frightened deer.
There was something about his expression.
Worry.
Fear.
And something more difficult to name.
Her mind was suspended in a strange limbo between confusion and incomplete clarity. She remembered nothing. She didn't know where she was. But she didn't dislike that face.
That puzzled her.
He frowned.
"Gesher," he repeated, now closer. "Can you hear me?"
He had to make a huge effort to concentrate.
He opened his mouth.
She closed it.
He tried again.
-Yeah…?
Her own voice sounded raspy, as if she hadn't used it for centuries.
The man took a small step towards her.
—Gesher, are you okay?
He hesitated.
The way he said her name… as if he was afraid it would disappear if he didn't repeat it.
He clung to that.
"I…" he swallowed. "Is my name Gesher?"
The change was immediate.
The color left the man's face.
Her pupils barely dilated.
And in that exact second, in that microscopic space between the question and the answer, something broke inside Spencer Reid.
Just because.
It was Gesher.
His partner.
Your colleague.
The woman who argued with him about profiles.

But even so, panic overwhelmed Spencer without him quite knowing why, and before he could even think, his mouth opened and he blurted out...
