The eldest daughter, a quiet and clear-eyed seventeen-year-old princess, grew up in Prince Svyatoslav's palace. The younger children, twins Boris and Gleb, were renowned for their mischief.
The time had come for his daughter to marry. The prince didn't want to force his daughter's heart and allowed her to choose for herself. Suitors came, but none ignited a spark in her eyes.
On Christmas Eve, a foreign guest arrived—the French Prince Percy Escallon. At dinner, the princess, hitherto silent, became animated, asking about France. She herself had secretly devoured French scrolls, and the prince's words were sweeter than honey to her.
The days flew by. The twins watched their sister blossom.
"Look," Gleb nudged his brother. "She's looking at him like he's an icon."
“And he’s like a cat on sour cream to her,” Boris chuckled.
They decided to go hunting. In a snowy field, the hounds picked up a hare. Percy jumped off his horse and raised his bow. The princess, staring at him, dropped her bow.
The prince approached with a soft smile:
- Let me show you.
He stood behind her, putting his arm around her shoulders and adjusting his hands on the bow. The princess froze, oblivious to everything else.
The twins watched.
“Look, he’s teaching her to shoot,” Gleb whispered.
"Yeah," Boris nodded. "She could shoot a wolf at ten years old."
"Well, yes," Gleb chuckled. "It seems our sister..."
“...crumbled,” Boris finished, and the twins buried their faces in the horses’ manes, choking with laughter.
