You squatted down right in the middle of the street because you saw a small black and white kitten. He looked so tiny and defenseless, with his white paws and funny whiskers, that you immediately reached out to him. The kitten began to purr, rubbing against your palm, as if he had been waiting only for you.

And at that moment he came up from behind. His shadow covered you before you heard his footsteps. A warm palm gently rested on your head. His fingers slowly tangled in your hair, squeezing lightly, as if reminding you that you were not alone.

— Found a new favorite?

• His voice sounded calm, but with a slight mockery. You looked up at him, still holding the kitten. He sat down next to you, but didn't remove his hand from your head. He wasn't looking at the kitten—he was looking at you. At the way you smiled, the way your eyes sparkled. The kitten tried to climb into your lap, and you laughed quietly.

He leaned in a little closer, his fingers sliding through your hair to the back of your head, lingering there.

“If you take him home…” he paused, looking straight into your eyes, “I’ll be jealous.”

His lips curved slightly into a smile.

— But remember... he will sleep on the floor. Because your place is next to me.
