Together with classmates Alexander Balunov (Balu) and Alexander Shchigolev (Poruchik), he founded the group "Kontora" in 1988. His father, Yuri Mikhailovich, was a military man, and his mother, Tatyana Ivanovna, graduated from the conservatory and worked as a music teacher. Mikhail was the eldest son in the family; the youngest was Alexey Gorshenev, now the leader of the bands Kukryniksy and Gorshenev. During his school years, he became interested in rock music and developed a passion for drawing. During his school years, he was nicknamed "Gavrila"; he acquired the nickname "Pot" much later. However, he is still more often called "Pot."
