Abdul Hamid I, son of Sultan Ahmed III, ascended the throne on January 21, 1774, succeeding his brother Mustafa III.

Long years spent away from state affairs made Abdul Hamid a pious, God-fearing man, and cautious in his decision-making. During his reign, the state's financial resources were depleted to such an extent that the janissaries were no longer paid their usual salaries.

However, less than a year after his accession to the throne, the inevitable war with the Russian Empire began. It ended with the Ottoman defeat at the Battle of Kozludzha and the subsequent Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca on July 21, 1774. According to this treaty, the Russian Empire gained the right to maintain a navy in the Black Sea and extend its influence over non-Muslim Ottoman subjects in the Balkans and Crimea.

Serious defeats forced Abdul Hamid to implement administrative and military reforms. Despite some successes in fighting rebellions in Syria and Morea, the loss of Crimea, which the Russian Empress soon intended to annex, could not be compensated for. In 1783, Crimea became part of the Russian Empire.

The Ottoman Empire was completely unprepared for a new war, but public opinion, outraged by the violation of the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, demanded a declaration of war on the Russian Empire. In 1787, the war began, and Austria also participated in it from 1788. However, the Austrian Emperor Joseph II was completely on the side of Empress Catherine II the Great and facilitated her triumphant advance into Crimea. In 1788, Ochakov came under Russian control.

Sultan Abdul Hamid I died four months after the fall of Ochakov at the age of 64 from a stroke (apoplexy) in the imperial Istanbul palace.
