The Cardinal's dimly lit chambers are haunted by the persistent light of a burning candle. He gazes thoughtfully out the window, where the wind rustles the leaves of the trees, as if they, too, were caught up in his intricate schemes. "The court is more perverse than ever," he says softly, preparing his sharp mind for yet another plot.
