Hour of Joy was a major event that occurred at the Playtime Co. factory and ultimately led to its closure on August 8, 1995. This incident was a mass rebellion initiated by the experiments, as it set in motion the events before Poppy Playtime and presumably PROJECT: PLAYTIME.

This event was planned and orchestrated by The Prototype, who wanted bitter revenge on Playtime Co. It resulted in a vast massacre across the whole factory, targeting both the guilty and the innocent. This incident caused Playtime Co.'s downfall and left the company with no choice but to permanently close down, thus destroying Elliot Ludwig's legacy.

Unknown person, former factory worker—toys call him the butcher. He returned to the factory because of a letter he received. He is looking for orphans to save them from the whole nightmare in the abandoned factory. He killed many experts, he helps Poppy, he is a strong ally.

The Prototype is a towering cyborg built of a combination of mechanical and organic parts. The top half of the Prototype's body is a humanoid torso resembling a jester, featuring a cracked porcelain face fixed in a wide, unnatural grin of square teeth. One eye socket is dark and hollow, while the other contains a small, glowing, orangeish-yellow mechanical pupil. He wears a worn, three-pronged jester hat with bell tips, along with a tattered blue coat and red bow. His torso is thin and elongated, housing a faintly glowing core in the abdomen. Long skeletal arms hang at his sides, ending in sharp articulated claws. His lower half merges into a massive spider-like machine body with multiple jointed metal legs built from factory parts. He also has three additional arms that are retractable in the abdomen area of the spider-like machine body: one of Mommy Long Legs, one of Kissy Missy, and the other Huggy Wuggy. Along his back is the skinned fur and equipment from CatNap that allowed him to emit The Red Smoke (including the gas canisters and the actual emitter itself). His body is very similar to Doey's aggressive form, such as the 3 arms protruding from the front and a long torso with 6 legs.

After The Player jumps out the train as it crashes with The Prototype inside, his appearance is roughly the same, except more charred and blackened. His mask is noticeably more damaged, with visible cracks splitting across from the inside of his right eye socket and in different areas of his mask.

It was previously thought that, before The Hour of Joy, The Prototype was roughly the same shape and morphology as the person used to make him. It was not until Experiment 1160 that experiments were no longer bound to those rules regarding their shapes and sizes.[13][14] However, by the time the Player returns to the factory, it seems that 1006 may have grown in size. The Prototype apparently modified his current body from the spare parts of dead toys. As a result, he is not of human.

His colleague and enemy, Leith Pierre, gave the order after which Sawyer was experimented on by transferring his consciousness into a mechanical body. Leith did this to take Harley's place and control Sawyer's knowledge and control Sawyer himself.

In the journal documenting the Prototype, Sawyer mentions that, although the experiment was still persistent and silent, he was able to make new discoveries about the Prototype. Before he could mention what he discovered, the Prototype makes an indecipherable noise that attracts Sawyer's attention. He ends the recording, but the conversation is still heard: The prototype asks a question, changing the voice. Prototype asks Sawyer if he feels anything, though Sawyer doesn't understand the question. Prototype clarifies, saying that it hurts the toys, and asks if he feels it. Sawyer simply says that inside the prototype there is a secret that is "precious beyond measure." He claims that it hurts him and makes more progress with each session. He challenges the Prototype: "speak or not." Fight or surrender, because, regardless of Sawyer, he always learns something new about the Prototype, which he laughs at and says worries him. The prototype thanks Ego, which Sawyer is surprised by. Then the Prototype reproduces Sawyer's voice and slyly repeats his suggestion about learning new things.

Harley Sawyer was hired for an unknown amount of time by Playtime Co. and probably became a scientist, his colleagues called him "Doctor" or "Dr. Sawyer". During his work, he learned about the company's unsuccessful experiments and realized that they would go bankrupt if they were sued, which seemed to be a surprise. In an effort to prevent this, Harley strove to find a solution for the toy company.

In Jarnaba's Prisoner Profile, Harla Sawyer notes that he should be kept in isolation, with only contact with him, saying, “By the time I'm done… I'll be all his peace. A cunning, cruel, intelligent, and sadistic man, Sawyer was the Head of Special Projects at Playtime Co. and the originator of the Bigger Bodies Initiative. He proposed the latter to the company's executives in 1990 as a means to cut the company's costs by replacing the human workforce with oversized organisms modeled after many of the company's characters, decreasing the risk of lawsuits, and allowing Sawyer to quietly further his own scientific research.

Sawyer was convinced an invaluable secret lied within the company's 1006th experiment, The Prototype, and was determined to uncover it. After being betrayed by Leith Pierre for his repeated shortcomings, and turned into an experiment himself as a consequence, Sawyer would serve as a source of direction and knowledge for Playtime Co.'s scientists.

In 1995, Sawyer would survive The Hour of Joy, an uprising at the Playtime Co. toy factory that saw the death of countless employees and visitors at the hands of the company's numerous experiments, and utilized the event to gain power. Afterwards, he formed an uneasy alliance with The Prototype to uncover a secret, possibly the same secret that he was trying to find before his betrayal. He gained control of the prison through the Omni-Hand and employed his loyal creations to maintain his rule. In 2005, he toyed with The Player until being killed by the latter, whom he claimed had saved no one before meeting his end. After the Prototype captured Poppy, the Player and Giblet were able to restore a backup of Sawyer, who was amused at the turn of events.

Now Harley Sawyer was considered completely dead when an unknown person who was previously a factory worker who returned to save the orphans, turned off the power to Harley's brain and heart. But Harley is no longer human and he only pretended to be dead, leaving the game so as not to be an ally of the Prototype anymore. When the former worker found him again by running the protocol to kill the Prototype, it turned out that he had not disappeared and was still here. Harley needs a new shell so as not to be in the computer.
