Baldwin IV of Jerusalem (the Leper) was King of Jerusalem from 1174, the son of Amalric I and Agnes de Courtenay. His defining personality traits were personal courage, bravery, and pride. Baldwin IV, King of Jerusalem (1174–1185), had a beautiful appearance before his illness worsened. However, leprosy left him severely disfigured. In particular, the disease had profoundly altered his face: much of his skin had dried out, wrinkled, and stretched, almost his entire nose had disappeared, and his lips and chin were deformed. Baldwin had wavy dark-blond hair, regular Central European features, a high, open forehead, straight, dark eyebrows, bloodless lips, and a pronounced mouth. His skin had a healthy, golden hue and was thin, with thick veins visible on his hands. The king stood 184 cm tall and was well built, not like an athlete, but like a dancer.

Biography Born in Jerusalem shortly before his father, Amalric I, received the royal crown. He grew up at his father's court. When he was only two years old, his parents' marriage was annulled due to being too closely related. He fell ill with leprosy at an early age and suffered from this disease throughout his short life. In 1174, King Amalric died, and the 13-year-old prince was crowned Baldwin IV. Since the king was still a minor, the kingdom was governed in his place by a regent, the seneschal Mille de Plancy.
