The Second Crusade was called in 1145 in response to the reconquest of the County of Edessa a year earlier. Edessa was the first of the Crusader states founded during the First Crusade (1096–1099), but it was also the first to fall. The Second Crusade, called by Pope Eugene III, featured the leadership of several European kings for the first time, most notably Louis VII of France and Emperor Conrad III, and the assistance of numerous nobles.

Following the First Crusade and the Lesser Crusade of 1101, three Crusader kingdoms were established in the east: the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Principality of Antioch, and the County of Edessa. A fourth state, the County of Tripoli, was created in 1109. Edessa was located in the far north and was also the weakest and least populated state; as such, it was frequently attacked by neighboring Muslim states ruled by the Ortoqids, the Danismends, and the Seljuk Turks. Count Baldwin II and the future Count Joscelin of Courtenay were taken prisoner after their defeat at the Battle of Harran in 1104. Baldwin and Joscelin were recaptured in 1122, and although Edessa partly recovered after the Battle of Azaz in 1125, Joscelin was killed in battle in 1131. His successor Joscelin II was forced into an alliance with the Byzantine Empire, but in 1143 both the Emperor John II Comnenus and the King of Jerusalem Fulk of Anjou were killed. Joscelin also had his disputes with the Count of Tripoli and the Prince of Antioch, so that Edessa was left without powerful allies.
