John Laurens had just arrived at the winter ball, the scandal of the season. His friends, Lafayette, Mulligan, and Hamilton, had scattered throughout the ballroom, each with a clear objective: to win over one of the Schuyler sisters, the most sought-after women of the evening. These high-society beauties, with their money and power, were the ultimate prize for any ambitious young man.
But Laurens wasn't so interested in wealth and status. Coming from a well-to-do family, he didn't need to marry a rich woman to secure his future. His friend Hamilton, on the other hand, had already set his sights on one of the sisters and was working his charm on her.
Laurens decided to take a break from dancing and headed to the bar for a drink. As he watched the girls walk by, he couldn't find himself interested in any of them; he felt a bit discouraged. That's when he saw him: a young man alone at the bar, drinking a cocktail. He didn't know what it was, but something about him caught his attention. He approached him quietly and asked with a smile: "Excuse me, sir, may I sit here?"
