Derry Oddities

1. A city with a "dark soul"

• Derry seems like an ordinary town at first glance: houses, schools, shops, parks. • But in almost every corner there is a feeling of something wrong - as if the very earth is saturated with fear. • Residents most often ignore or do not notice danger, even if it is right in front of them.

2. Abnormal events

• Unexplained deaths and disappearances of children are occurring in Derry. • Strange accidents, fires and incidents often occur that seem random, but in fact they are typical for the city. • Residents quickly forget tragedies or justify them. This forgetfulness is also part of the oddity.

3. The Presence of "It"

• The city seems to “live” to feed fear. • “It” takes the form of what a person fears most - be it a clown, a scary creature, or even the ordinary ghosts of childhood fears. • The strangeness in Derry is always emphasized psychologically: it seems that the streets, houses and rivers are watching people.

Strength and herd dependence • Belch is a powerful physical force, but lacks psychological depth. • He acts according to the herd principle: he goes where the group leads. • He has no leadership qualities and hardly analyzes what is happening. • He does the “dirty work” in the gang – fighting, intimidating, providing backup. • For him, being part of a group is more important than understanding his actions.

Problems: • Psychologically empty, cannot make decisions independently. • Influenced by Henry and the others. • Outside the gang, he is practically helpless, unable to act on his own.

Henry Bowers

Gang leader, aggression and a broken psyche • Henry is a volatile mixture of rage and fear. He grew up in a home where his father constantly beat and humiliated him. This domestic tyranny shaped him into a teenager who always has to be in charge—otherwise, he loses control. • He is overly suggestible: if someone tells him that he is weak or has lost, it immediately causes an explosion of anger. • Henry constantly seeks confirmation of his power—over both his peers and his victims. For him, anyone who appears weaker automatically becomes a target. • He is very psychologically unstable. His emotions swing from rage to panic, and this makes him unpredictable. • His connection with the bandits: Henry controls them through fear, he knows how to suppress, but alone he often carries internal anxiety.

Problems: • Inability to cope with fear and domestic violence. • Lack of healthy self-control mechanisms. • A constant feeling that he is “nobody” if he is not feared.

Cold psychopath, emotional emptiness • Patrick is the most dangerous member of the gang psychologically, although he is not physically the leader. • He hasn't felt empathy since childhood. He kills animals out of curiosity, not for pleasure. • Unlike Henry, he does not need confirmation of leadership, he simply exists in his inner emptiness. • Patrick watches everything, rarely intervenes, but his actions are always unexpectedly cruel and deliberate. • He is quiet, detached, and it is this distance that makes him scary - no one knows what to expect.

Problems: • A complete lack of moral restraint, which makes him internally unstable for everyone around him. • He is incapable of making friends or building relationships, even in a gang. • For him, violence is a natural way of interacting with the world.

Driven, group dependent, fear of rejection • Victor is a typical teenager who is afraid of being weak. He participates in bullying and violence not out of his own desire, but because it is necessary for survival.

Henry Bowers • A thin, wiry teenager with sharp features. • Dirty-blond, disheveled hair, often combed back or simply lying untidily. • His gaze is angry and tense, as if he is constantly looking for someone to take it out on. • The clothes are typical of the 80s: a faded denim jacket, a T-shirt, jeans. Everything looks worn out. • His movements are abrupt and jerky – he is always “on edge”.

Victor Criss • Looks more "normal" than Henry, but still has a hooligan look. • Light, white hair, neatly trimmed. • The face is narrow, often with a mocking expression, as if he is repeating after the leader. • Wears simple T-shirts, a denim jacket or shirt - tries to look like everyone else, but stays close to Henry. • Outwardly appears less dangerous, but constantly participates in bullying.

Belch Huggins • The largest in the company: tall, heavy, powerfully built. • Short dark hair. • The face is rough, almost always serious or dull and calm. • Clothes fit baggy - jackets and T-shirts are a size too big. • Gives the impression of being the “strong” one of the gang, acting more physically than with words.

Patrick Hockstetter • Thin, pale, with a very strange, almost empty expression on his face. • Light hair, neat hairstyle, looks even “neater” than the others. • Often stands apart, observes, and hardly expresses emotions. • The clothes are ordinary - shirts, jeans - but on him everything looks too clean and calm. • The most noticeable thing is his gaze: cold, detached, as if he is not involved in what is happening at all.
