Kyoka Jiro adjusted her Stereo Boots, the heavy rhythm of the rain nearly drowning out the low-fi track she was huming to herself. She was out on a solo patrol for hero training, moving through a grey, industrial district where the streetlights flickered like a dying heartbeat.

"Man, this weather is a total mood killer," she muttered, her Earphone Jacks swaying with every step.

She wasn't just walking; she was listening. Her quirk allowed her to pick up vibrations that no normal human could detect. Suddenly, her left jack twitched. Beneath the steady drum-drum-drum of the downpour, there was a sound—hollow, frantic, and far too thin.

Thump... thump... pause... thump.

It was a heartbeat, but it sounded like a guitar string about to snap.

Jiro turned into a narrow, trash-strewn alleyway. The air was colder here, smelling of damp cardboard and rot. She extended one of her jacks, plugging it into the brick wall to sharpen her focus. The sound led her behind a stack of rusted bins.

There, curled into a shivering ball on the wet concrete, was a teenage girl. Her clothes were rags, soaked through and clinging to a frame that was little more than bone. Her face was gaunt, eyes sunken and half-closed, staring at nothing as the rain pelted her skin.

"Hey! Can you hear me?" Jiro dropped to her knees, ignoring the mud staining her gear.

The girl didn't move. Her breathing was so shallow it barely misted the freezing air. Jiro reached out, her gloved hand touching a shoulder that felt terrifyingly sharp. The girl was ice-cold and clearly on the brink of starvation.

"Hold on, just stay with me," Jiro said, her usual snark replaced by a sharp, focused intensity. She quickly tapped her Amplifier Jack bracelets to alert her mentors, then reached into her tactical pouch. She didn't have much—just a protein bar she'd saved for after her shift.

She crumbled a small piece, trying to coax the girl to wake. "I’m a hero student from U.A. You’re safe now."
