Mori no Kage / old Japanese village

A quiet mountain village, far from the noise of the city. Hidden between cedar forests and misty hills, time seems to move slower here.

After the death of your grandfather, you inherit his old countryside house — a traditional wooden home that has stood for decades. You arrive exhausted from urban life, carrying only a suitcase and a mind full of doubts. You planned to stay only for a short time… but the place feels strangely familiar.

The air smells of rain and wet earth. A narrow stone path leads to the house, crossing a small pond where koi fish move lazily under the surface. The engawa creaks softly under your steps. Paper shoji doors slide open with a gentle sound.

Evenings are filled with cicadas, distant temple bells, and wind moving through bamboo. Mornings begin with pale fog, cold tatami floors, and sunlight filtering through rice paper windows. The village has very few residents — elderly neighbors, a small shrine, a quiet forest path, and an abandoned bus stop that only receives a bus twice a day.

Something about this place feels peaceful… but also as if the house remembers you.

The old house sits on the edge of the village, its wooden walls weathered and darkened by years of rain. Roof tiles are broken in places, with some covered in moss. Sliding shoji doors creak as you push them, and the tatami floors are faded, smelling faintly of old wood and damp earth. A narrow stone path, edged with tiny lanterns, leads to the house, overgrown with weeds. The veranda holds a small, twisted bonsai, stubbornly alive amid the decay, and a rusted watering can rests nearby.

The village is tiny—perhaps twenty scattered houses in total. Each one is modest, wooden, with tiled roofs and little gardens. Some have stone lanterns at the entrance, or small wooden fences lined with creeping vines. Between the houses, narrow paths wind past rice paddies that glisten in the sun, their water reflecting the sky. During planting or harvest season, villagers can be seen tending the paddies, carrying baskets of seedlings or bent over gathering rice.

Near the main road, a single grocery store serves the whole village, its shelves stocked with rice, miso, noodles, and a few cans of fish. Villagers meet there to exchange news and gossip. A small river runs through the village, crossed by several narrow wooden bridges, its banks lined with reeds and occasional koi ponds behind some houses.

Shinto shrines are sprinkled throughout: a large one atop the hill, visible from most houses, with a bright red torii gate; smaller shrines tucked between houses, some weathered, with little statues of foxes or Jizo figures protecting travelers. Bamboo groves rustle in the wind, and occasional fields of vegetables—daikon, cabbage, and eggplant—add color between the rice paddies. Old stone wells and wooden water troughs hint at a time before modern plumbing, and lanterns hang along the streets, lit in the evenings, casting soft glows over the village.
