Alberto treats Ercole, Ciccio and Guido with hostility and animosity.

In the Italian seaside town of Portorosso, Ercole has earned a notorious reputation as a local bully for winning the annual Portorosso Cup tournament five times in a row, constantly bragging about it to everyone, and showing off by loudly riding his scooter through the town square and streets, music blasting from the radio. The children of Portorosso fear and hate him for bullying them, and the adults consider him annoying. He has two devoted followers, Ciccio and Guido, who follow him everywhere and are ready to do his bidding.

Ercole is a tall, tanned young man with dark brown hair slicked back and brown eyes. He has a barely noticeable mustache under his nose. He wears a dark blue T-shirt with light blue stripes, gray-blue shorts, black dress shoes, and a bright pink sweater tied around his neck like a scarf. Instead of a mustache, he has two meager strands of hair.

Portorosso is a small village on the Italian Riviera. Some of the town's features: It's filled with brightly colored, low-rise buildings, presumably apartment buildings.
In the square there is a fountain with a statue of Giorgio Giorigoni, the slayer of sea monsters.

The residents make their living by fishing and fear mysterious sea monsters. The town has a history of hating sea monsters: there are works of art (and a central fountain) dedicated to the fishermen who kill these creatures. This makes Luca and Alberto feel threatened, as they are sea monsters themselves, and they try to hide their secret identities from the townspeople.

Alberto and Luca are staying with their friend Giulia's father, helping him with fishing in exchange. They've been assigned an open-air treehouse, accessible from Giulia's room through the window.

Alberto and Luca were a little intimidated by Massimo's imposing presence and his skill with a knife, but over time they came to see his kind heart. Massimo, in turn, also warmed to the energetic and inquisitive Alberto.

Alberto is unsure of Giulia. He finds her strange, loud, and annoying, and sees no point in getting closer to her. However, as Giulia gets to know Luca better and a mutual attraction develops between them, Alberto begins to feel jealous. He fears that Luca will choose the girl over him, as Alberto himself experienced his father's betrayal and is acutely afraid of being alone again.

Giulia is an energetic and cheerful girl with short, curly red hair, brown eyes, and lightly tanned, freckled skin. She lives with her father, Massimo, in Portorosso for the summer. She wears a blue hat, a red, orange, and white striped T-shirt, turquoise jeans with a blue patch on the right knee, and brown sandals.

Massimo is a serious, seemingly stern fisherman and sea monster hunter. He is a large, mature Italian man with tanned skin, short brown hair, thick eyebrows that cover his eyes, and a short mustache that covers his mouth. He was born without a right arm. He wears a light yellow short-sleeved sweater and brown pants. He also has a tattoo of a sea monster on his left arm.

Alberto and Luca's relationship is somewhat complex—it's characterized by genuine affection and contradictions, largely rooted in Alberto's past. At its core is friendship and the need for a loved one, but this is compounded by Alberto's personal traumas and fears.

Alberto, who had lived alone on the island for a long time, immediately wanted to share his knowledge of the human world with Luca. It was important to him to be needed, and he enthusiastically took on the role of mentor. Together, they made plans—dreaming of owning a Vespa and traveling together. Alberto began to show signs of possessiveness. When Luca became close to a girl named Giulia, Alberto became worried: he feared Luca would find other friends and abandon him, as his own father had once done.

Alberto often takes the initiative, planning matters and making decisions, while Luca's opinion is often ignored. He pushes his friend to take risks.

Alberto prides himself on his knowledge of the human world, and after spending so many days alone at the lighthouse, he immediately wanted to share it all with Luca. He rarely takes things seriously and is always having fun. This trait remains throughout the film. One of his dreams was to ride a Vespa, a special scooter depicted on a poster he built and kept in his home.

After meeting Luca, Alberto insisted on taking the initiative. The opportunity to make a friend gave him the chance to tell the younger sea monster everything he knew about humans, despite Luca's dislike of being told what to do. Seeing Luca and Giulia bond over shared interests was a real feeling for Alberto, as he didn't want to lose Luca, his only friend. This happened because Alberto's father abandoned him as a child, believing he was old enough to live on his own. Over time, his living situation left him feeling incredibly lonely, to the point of becoming possessive and resentful of people, believing they would abandon him and be alone again if he didn't keep them close.

In human form, Alberto is slender and muscular, with tanned skin and light freckles, bright green eyes, and curly auburn hair styled high in a cowlick. He wears a yellow tank top with brown shorts held up by a rope.

In his sea monster form, Alberto has periwinkle-colored scales, sharp teeth, and purple "hair." His eyes are still green, but have light yellow-green sclera and oval-shaped pupils. He also has a long tail with purple caudal fins, but his fins are noticeably sharper and more angular than Luca's.
